Fumina Easy Clubman 19/11/11 By Al Mason
Well with a lot of rain meant plenty of mud, deep rivers and for something extra excitement? A S#$t load of leaches! I aimed this ride at people who haven’t done a Clubman ride before, or who think my usual rides are a bit nuts? So with 12 people on the list I headed for my second home at Fumina, to be greeted by Clarky eating his breakfast as he waited for me at the start point. As I unloaded a steady stream of riders arrived and geared up. With the clock striking 9:15 for our 9am kick off, i gave up on the no shows and hit the mud with 8 others in toe. After a couple slick first tracks it was the first crossing, which wasn’t deep but was flowing well. As I guided the riders across one by one as they arrived, checking to see how they were traveling? “Slippery, isn’t it!” seem to come up a lot. A couple were getting to terms with the grip level. And with some great saves and some not so great dismounts? Fumina on this sort of day is at its best, and soon turns any hero into a zero very quickly. At the regroup after the second crossing a Husky need some attention due to a little water ingestion, and also needed some tools and a spare spark plug? This gave me some time to try and sort out old faithful stuck starter motor solenoid problem. “Disconnect start switch and kick start all day, Yea!!” I then decided by the stories to easy up the next few tracks, and miss a few tracks to keep the group moving and give them some more time to find their feet. A few of my favorite tracks got a run in. Covered in all their armoral'd glory, that everyone seems to love. So we pressed on. I keeped making small increases in the difficulty, until someone put their hand up or seem to struggle. To everyone’s credit and a couple of second and third runs at a couple of the hills or obstacles, no one needed rescuing or assistance. With a very short and wet lunch I opened the trails up again to let the group have some rest (I am getting soft?) and make some ground, before I threw in a couple of my technical sections to see if I would end up on anyone’s hit list? At the regroup it was decided Clarky’s wheel bearings were very angry at their treatment and a quick run home was best and some sooking about needing to be home early? (the reason I put in my post I don’t believe in a finish time for dirt bike ride as s#$t happens on the trail) This meant we would have to cross what’s left of a small, moss covered bridge to get us on track to a short trip home. After the bridge is a track I love, but avoided to take the easy option to get home quicker. However a fallen tree with a nasty track around I thought would push a couple in the group to far out of their comfort zones? So Adam took half the group that way and I lead the others through a technical short cut. As I popped out at the other end after letting of a little steam and having some fun on the way through I quick scooted up Burns track to meet Adam and his group. We waited for a while, ok a long while before Jake and someone else went back for a look see. We soon had everyone back together and after letting them catch their breath, we pushed on for home with only one option hill alone the way. And a small premature bike wash by the tail man (see Lefty, I said tail man. So no one will know it was you?) With the top of the staircase came the last regroup were I asked if anyone wanted want another small loop as the others headed for the cars? “NO” was the call and I didn’t think going alone was good, so we all headed for the cars. 98k done and a 4 o’clock finish was the end of the day. I hope everyone found the day to be what they wanted to get out of it? I would call the day an easy clubman day and hope I didn’t push anyone to far. Also sorry to the group I dragged through the short cut, as I sometimes forget my idea of fun isn’t everyone’s, Al.

Hi Al Thanks for the awesome ride you put on and thanks to Lefty for helping me sort out the traction issue on the first hill. With this being my first easy clubman ride it was a really good experience and the slippery conditions added to the skills building excercise. Thanks to all the riders for making it a great day. For those of you who did not sign up for this ride " you guys missed out of one of the best rides this year" Cheers Rudi

Top day once again Al. You put on a great ride in a great area with a great buch of blokes. Geez it was wet. Not cold but wet and a little slippery. Sorry about the wheel bearings letting go. They were fine the day before when I check them. Stuff happens I guess. Cheers Clarky.

Ha ha, no probs Rudi. My first go at tail man and I didn't mind it at all. I like to sun up the day as "Al's world" he just loves it there and shares the love with the other riders !!! Hang on, not the way your think'n Zeb. Anyways, Clarky was right when he said it wasn't cold. it was quite warm, even when we went through the rivers. Our feet were wet but kept warm, strange !!! The pace was steady and got to 90 k's in no time. There were some gun riders on the day but good to see some step out of their comfort zone to have a go. You know who I'm talkin about. Al's a great bloke and is only to willing to help. If you want to challenge yourself and step up, go on his ride. That's how I roll, ha ha ! Great day mate.
Love Lefty.
PS. 2 oil changes already and still latte color !!!

Cheers Lefty. Yes i do have a fond attachment to the place and probly spend far to much time out there on the bike or in the cruzier? Al
Ps. Around 7 changes seems to be the magic number to bring the oil back to the correct color. Also make sure you drain it well by leaving it over night and then lean the bike over the next day to get the bit of oil that gets stuck on the gearbox side of the engine.

Cool Lefty, i will need your help as always to get through. One day i might even be good enough to lead a Clubman ride by myself? Dont forget when the oil is all done and you have gone for your first real ride, to drain that lot of oil and call the job done. Al
