Does anyone think its a good idea to possibly purchase EPIRB's for the club? the could easily fit into the first aid bags and be carried with the tail rider.
The version i have is the
Brand: GME
Model: MT410 406 MHz PLB
Needs to be a GPS Version!
(From the Emergency Beacon registration website it states:)
GPS- Has an accuracy locator of 120 Meters
Non GPS has an accuracy locator of 5km
there is a section on the registration website for other details, such as to explain that if the club was to purchase the EPIRB's that they are registered to AMTRA and that if an alert was to be set off by the registered beacon that they are to dispatch a ambulance or rescue helicopter immediately as there would be a serious Injury that would been immediate medical assistance.
You can also keep up dated easily as to the particular EPIRB that group has and the riding location where that ride is as to confirm the location as a secondarily measure.
Would be interested in your views, i'm sure i know how Dane's throughts on the matter.

Rob, i see Mat R has it down to disscused at the commitee meeting this month. I must admit one is always in my fourby and travels everywhere with it. However ive never carried it whilst riding or leading a ride. After the reports from Rawson i may change my mind? Still a little unsure if i would trust the one from my fourby in my backpack not to be accendentily set off. Will look into a model with a replaceable battery for the next one as the shelf life of my current unit was to short and is not a through away item.

Interesting topic, who was the guy who had the epirb on the ride. Forget his name but he was carrying everything in his back pack. Congratulations to him. He said his dad bought it for him and have several in his family. Anybody know what they cost and can you reset them. I'm interested in getting one.

Iv'e had some prices through my wifes work on epirbs and let Will know they are going to discuss this with the committee no doubt people will not all agree but for our own peace of mind i think it was very handy where we were and we should have some available if we are going to ride in more remote locations .We should also look at usable 2 way radios we use them at the high country but why not for our weekly rides if more of us in the club brought them the rides might flow a bit better i would like to no your thoughts.

The modern day ERIRB is a SPOT as it also allows SMS communication during the day over Satellite NOT mobile network. Has 4 modes 000 send help urgent, send help not urgent, home late some issues and OK, All OK. Links to Google map tracking and sends GPS co-ordinates with messages. The Australian base is in Canberra they are widely used by Australian Police and Emergency services. http://satellitephonehireaustralia.com.au/spotsatellitesales.phpAs far as 5W radio's are concerned, yes we are supposed to have two on each ride since AMTRA signed the DSE trail riding code of conduct last year which mandates we will carry them, requests for these are pending ........... Well I was the one with the EPIRB,
the GME one that I own is fully water proof and comes with a wetsuit material carry case, there’s no possible way of it being set off as the back of the unit has an aerial curled up and will not be set off until the aerial is fully extended and folded out.
As for the radios, I’m also riding between my mate and i with a water proof UHF, they say they have 15KM radius transmission, but I clearly understand this is not the case in the high country.. But the fact is if more people have them the message can also be carried through the group to the next person that picks up the transmission.
The Price of my EPIRB was around the $480 mark for the GPS positing, but it does not send messages as this other one Brad is talking about, And as for resetting them and cost wise, we sent ours off to somewhere in Canberra and they replaced the whole unit for nothing.
Well worth the expense I think.
Will try and make it to this month’s meeting and bring the stuff I carry with me.

I've got a few vids I took on the day, only got them off the camera last night to have a look at. I've got 1 of Dane being airlifted out and a few of the various river crossings. Unfortunately I missed most of the interesting crossings/drownings.
Not sure how to post up a video but I'll have ago in the next few days.

I saw this device, spot connect, here in Canada. Could be an option if anyone wants to keep contact in a remote area. It allows your smart phone to work as a satelite phone as well as sending emergency SOS with gps location. Looks like its available in Australia. Catch is there is a yearly subscription. I think it might be about $100 US. Big advantage over an epirb is that you can talk to the emergency services and/ or family. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/01/spot-connect-turns-your-smartphone-into-a-satellite-communicator/Not much riding here in Canada. I think the -40 deg c in winter has something to do with it. I'm doing a weeks riding in Alaska in Sept which should be interesting. Onion |
