Be hydrated.. Several days before a big ride, start doubling your water intake. If you are not peeing clear fluid then you need more water. Keep alcohol to a minimum. Having a hangover on the ride day will not be fun. Being fit helps too, the more time you spend in the saddle the easier it will get.. I actually try to stand a lot if possible, my knees start to ache when sitting while riding after a while. Good carb meal the night before, pasta or something like that.

The first step for you Zeb is to stop smoking and let your lungs recover. Until then you will always struggle.

What Stewart said, plus pace your self, meaning don't race your self & wear your self out, I did that when I did a 7 day high country ride 2 years ago, the shortest day was 190 km & some was 210 km a day, on the last day some of the younger blokes were riding much slower then the first day, for me I was just coming good Oh, does that mean I'm an expert rider

While we are no the subject of bangers ... Who reckons that their is any truth in the schools of thought that riding a 2T burns more energy than 4T over the course of a longer ride.

Zeb i wonder were that question may have started? Smoking is a given and so are all the others. My opinion is ride at 80% all day and only turn on the charm when something presents itself. Riding with in your ablity helps remove time spent tasting the dirt! And the most energy burn't is in picking up a bike that should't have been there in the first place. I have had lots of quick blokes on my rides that are guns in the morning and like making their presents know! Even give me stick about my pace! But by the end of my loop are more like half blocked water pistols as i fly past at the same pace they gave stick for earlier in the day. And hydration always seems to bring people undone. I carry a half frozen bottle of power aid wedged next to camel back bladder. One it keeps the bladder cold through the day, but the look on people's faces as the day ends and your grabing an ice cold drink from you back pack and their on warm drink or empty, gives you a good perk up for the final few trails home. Works for me anyway Al

That's hard to say, I haven't ridden the 2 banger on a ride like the 7 day HCR, my thoughts are, a 4 stroke is a little easier power wise, but the lightness of the 2 stroke will save your energy, what I will say is that the 2 stroke is more fun Go the 2 smokers
