hey all,  bought a lid ( my first off road one at that!)  Its a Thor Force, fibreglass composite number.  $500 worth for $300 at AMX wharehouse.  Cheap because its got some Monster Energy drink graphics on it, but I'm not too concerned with that. It nice and light.
For a newbie I found a few things out.  Firstly the helmets from USA are heaps cheaper but don't have the Aus. standards sticker which makes them illegal to wear.  It would be considered you were not wearing a helmet at all and the TAC and VicPol would be very grumpy (as per usual)
The sizes differ from road bike lids,I have a large Shoei but I got a medium Thor.
Fitting between brands differs a fair bit as does padding quality, try a few on and you will know in no time.
I thought the M Thor a bit tight (after I got it home!!) BUT after removing the cheek pieces I found it fits great around the head,(most importaint) its just the padding pushing on my face.  So I put the padding on the floor and a case of beer on top for a few hours, its pushed down just enough to fit quite well.
Helmet construction is simple for me, Mick Doohan never raced in a plastic helmet and I'll never wear one either, regardless of how good they are.  Just google up info on helmets and see how the composites beat plastic.
AMX does not have all the brands but I think this is a quality lid for a fair price and the fit is now nice.
Next up is the epic adventure of buying boots!!
Cheers, Pete

I hope the case of beer was empty, cos it would get awfully warm after sitting out for a couple of hours!

You'll find that the cheek pads compress over time, so they may feel tight initially, but will start to squash after a few rides.

Next up is the epic adventure of buying boots!!

Good luck with that!
Rule of thumb, the more $$, generally the better.  Spend what you can afford, and invest in the better known brands.  Remember, they are not designed for walking in, so stomping around a show-room is not a good indication of how they will perform.  Look for good ankle support and enough room to wriggle your toes, but not let your foot move around inside.  Also consider good protection for your shin, and that the buckles don't stick out!
