KLX250 had a major change around 07/08 so if older style bike not worth $5000.  They where/are only $6500 new.

If you want to push him Yamaha way then tell him to look at a TTR250. As far a basic trailbike they seem to go well and will do most things you ask of them.

People only get bored with KLX/TTR/DRZ 250's etc because they see what they may be able to do on full on enduro type bikes. But by then the cheapy trail bike has done it's job - got them hooked into dirt bikes.

If going a WR250 then he would need to understand the extra maintenance required on them over a basic bike like the TTR250.

I agree with Mat.  The more 'basic' the trail-bike, the better for beginers.  My trusty DR 250 was/is a great bike for all round riding, but the WR is better.  It does require a bit more maintenance, but the results are worth it!
