Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Beer in one hand - throttle in the other - body thoroughly used up,totally worn out and screeming what a ride

The idea is very sensible. Rod Lay proposed this many years ago and Peter Ellard was pushing it hard until he retired from AMTRA duties as he had little support.

Over the last 5 years I have raised this with various parties whilst attending the Motorcycle Expo in Melbourne. Vic Police Offroad guys were sympathetic yet said they were not in favour for various reasons i.e there were still too many unlicensed/uninsured riders/bikes out there doing the wrong thing. The respective talking heads/public faces of the Off Road Motorcycle Magazines said they were in support but wouldn't be the voice for the discussion (they were too busy). As someone who has brought his son through riding in the bush on private and public areas (and paid for it) I applaud the push to get this through. The paper sets out good grounds and logic in the argument for this to be adopted. AMTRA is a great organisation with a membership that broadly supports legal riding opportunties for all. Hope this gets the hearing and support it deserves.

Spoke to Rod a MA RE: GLS ( Graded licence system ) gave me a person to contact at vic roads. I will contact him this week.
I thought there would be more interest in this topic As there has been a fair bit going on that I did not know about so if you have an opinion post it so I can get an idea on where the club stands in the topic. John T

I think it's a bloody brilliant idea.
Although it doesn't concern me (I don't have kids who are interested in riding), I support the idea, and commend Meat Head in his efforts to follow it through.
Looks like a little bit of Peter E is rubbing off!

I think this is a great idea as you can get a junior boat and pwc licence so why not a dirt bike junior licence?

As a dad of two boys who love riding I agree with an off road licence for kids. It is near on impossible for us to take the youngsters out in the bush without running the risk of an encounter with Mr.Plod.

I support the idea. Would like the club to take it up as something to pursue.

All, Over the years quite a bit of discussion has taken place on this matter. It is a sensitive and complicated matter and probably requires a brave person to make a decision, bearing in mind the repercussions if some young person was hurt!!. In 2004 I wrote to the minister of transport on this issue and received the attached reply from the then Chief Executive of Vic Roads, David Anderson. Food for thought, what he has had to say is based on information from various sources and research.
