Fumina, Last tracks Check?
24/9/11 By Al Mason

A dry day at Fumina only comes around about 1 in 100 days of the year. With a reduced ride list and a couple of no shows, 9 of us headed out to check some tracks for my up coming Fumina 2 day ride. Had some regulars, some people on their first crack at one of my Clubman rides.
On the bikes for 9:10am at straight to the imformas “mine shaft” track. Was impressed that everyone flew up and court me as some (a lot) sleepy trees were having a rest.
About half way around a much shortened version of my usual loop we met Tickets and his crew. Tickets was not having the new bike run in ride he wanted after a head on? (Poor bastard!) A quick check all was good and I got my group on the move.
The plan for the day was to check some tracks, however the clock was ticking faster than usual and as we run later and later for our lunch and fuel stop. I had to start dropping some tracks and hit the flowing stuff to pick up the pace. Not that anyone was holding us up, lots of storm damage to ride round, under and over. Some of which had to be quite creative.
As we rolled (well Aaron pushed) into lunch at 2:30pm and hour and half late, there was some weary looking souls already? (Think a couple were shocked to hear how easy I had been?) My dad, wife and son had lunch cooked and cold drinks ready as we ate and refueled, Finished off with some cake from Mark’s wife. It was then time to get back on the bikes and race the sun home. Trevor decided that the car had a better time frame home and took a lift in the support car.
3:15pm and the newly named “After Lunch Track”, by Aaron is a cool way to get warmed up and question weather you should have had so much lunch. 6ks of standing, sitting, ducking and short vertical climbs that only took us 45mins? I had a blast and was happy as a pig in s#*t!! Half way through marking a corner Aaron came through, having a ball. Because I could hear his giggles over the TM’s pipe! “Al you’re a sick man” was the comment. Which was funny, as I had planned about another 40ks of that sort of stuff on the return trip to the cars. As we regrouped, I asked how everyone was traveling and if they all had good head lights? Darren was on this ride to see if he still wanted to have his name down on the 2 day ride list? “2 day ride. Jam it up you’re a#*e!!”, was the call from Darren. I think he meant to say “i am not sure Al”, but maybe not.
With a lack of enthusiasm amongst some of group and a long way home. The group decided it would be better if I brought back the flowing tracks and some progress towards home. The trip home was a mixture of fast flowing and short cuts as we raced the sun. The river from a couple weeks ago that was up to my belly button was the only obstacle that was unknown on the way back. No problem and ride able this time we hit some main gravel roads till my favorite and last track home as always.
Back at the cars just after 5pm, with lots of weary smiles, we loaded up to head home. Aaron questioned why I don’t have any friends? With everyone having a good day, no injuries, bike failure or punctures. Big thanks to Mark for tail man duties all day. And thanks to the group for either enjoying the day and the others still enjoying the tamer day than usual with me. I had a ball!!

Where do I begin Huh Yes it was a great day, 162 on my clock and a variety of trails and tracks. We had everything ranging from up's and downs, rivers and creeks, slow and fast, dust and no dust, snags and kababs, light and near dark, fuel and no fuel, high fives and low fives, wishes and wish nots. Special mention goes to the thrush queen. Great blokes on a great ride and very well organized. Special thanks to the BBQ squad for the lunch and cool drinks. Looking forward to the two day !!

In all the excitement of saying goodbye I forgot to get my 10lt petrol can !!! Did anyone collect the leftovers ??

Cheers,

Lefty.

Great ride Al.  Great organisation and fantastic lunch.  Thanks to your helpers for that. I haven't done a ride like that for ages.  Bit saw on Sunday from a good workout.  Keep my name down for the 2 day ride.  I apologise for any verbal abuse directed at you.

Lefty I have your jerry.  We were trying to work out who the dumb ar$e was that left it behind.  It all makes sense now.

As usual another great ride by Al, he seems to know every nook and cranny of that area including all the best ST. The day worked out well for me, got a good ride in and still got home early enough to keep the missus happy. Gotta love that!

Keep em comin' Al  Grin

Top day Al,thanks to Cooper,Shaz and Al's dad for waiting patiently with lunch and not calling search & rescue  Grin
I have some footage of the day but it's rated ST and not suitable for this forum. I will bring it to the meeting Wed night and see if I can get it to play. thanks to Mark for tailman duties for the day,I did enjoy our little sprint on the final track Smiley
