First of all, thanks Brad for organising this AMTRA get together, it was good last year but heaps better this year!!
After last Years Buller Ride 2011, there was no way that i was going to miss out on such a good ride, last years ride was in my best 10 AMTRA Events, and this time round it was even better!!
I've been watching the weather all week, and hoping to God the weather would be perfect like last years ride, and yes my prays were answered. It rained most of Friday, and perfect Saturday & Sunday "SUN SUN SUN" and around 12-20 Degrees. With the rain on Friday , it made the 2 Days of riding a blissful experience and no Jackets required.
Friday Night :Brad and Roscoe cooked hamburgers and i chopped and cooked the Fresh Onions with Pauly, "Thanks Brad for the real deal Onions not those Frozen packet Crap.
last year i Cooked up a batch of Scones with Jam n Cream, so i thought id'e do the same this year, so the Boys Hoovered them down and then started on the Port Etc, i think we hit the cot around 1 Ish. Pauly Farted like a Bullfrog every 30 Sec, and we talked for Hrs about Nothing.
Saturday:
Meathead entered the room around 7.30 to wake us up for a Egg n Bacon Breaky. We all got ready and i called a 9.00am Meeting to discuss the ride and what happens if the Sh!t hits the Fan.
We took off at 9.30 and headed for Craigs Hut and before i knew it, we were there. Pauly was pushing Meatheads buttons so he decided to chase Paul and nearly fell Ass Over but managed to keep off the ground, Pauly hit the deck and ripped the skin of his Hands, "laugh" we all pissed ourselves laughing, never give Meathead the sh!ts "You will come off 2nd best". Off too Abbeyard we went, the track were in 100% tip top riding condition from the rain on Friday and in some spots it was flat chat with the more experienced rides "NOT SEANO" going ballistic. We arrived at the Block and had lunch, but was unable to get some refreshments from the small shed, as for some reason "the pin No was different from the Big Shed. "Beats the hell outta me why we make things hard up there". Anyway back to Buller we headed and there was no stopping the Freight Train as we hauled Ass into buller.
Saturdays Meal was chow food and Scones, with more drinking and some AMTRA member antics which i was not involved with "Yeh right ". The two young Fellas went to bed around 7 WEAK" and most of us at 11.
Sunday:
Bacon n Eggs again and on the bikes at 9.30, Brad pre drove the plotted course with Dennis on Saturday so i was using a marked up map that was a bit hit n miss. I took a wrong turn not long into the ride and ended up on a Mountain Bike trail and there was no going back as the track was the unbelievable with about 10 man made log crossing with some about 8 ft above the river at only 2ft wide and no railing, it was a bit of Ass clincher, we got to the end of the track which turned out to be at the bottom of the mountain "THE TRACK WENT FOREVER" . After working out a new plan on where to next, it was off to check out some Narrow trail on the map, we found one and 20 Minutes later we popped out the other end. Another Map plan was in order as the time was ticking by, and i wanted to be back in Buller by 1.00pm.
We had lunch on the trail and ended back at the bottom of the Log crossing track, but with a Mountain bike event on , we thought it wise not to head up the track. So now the quickest way back was up the Tar.
I started just cruising up the tar knowing any minute now it would be on for Young and all. Ken and john passed me at warp Factor 9, so instantly i was on the Gas flat out with Jake hot on my heels, it was like being in a Grand Prix jostling for positions. Kenny and i ended up fighting it out in the front for 1st place. Ken would pass me but i would soon whoop his Ass in the Corners and the 3 or 4 Hair pin bends. We got back to the Lodge and i couldn't believe how low i was cornering, as i and some other had scuffed the outer knobs to the very edge " that's something you rarely do".
We all got back in one piece and cleaned up " EVEN SCOTT DID SOME CLEANING a rare sight" 
then we packed up and headed home.
Another unforgettable weekend with the Boys from AMTRA
Come on next year to get out and find some more sensational Narrow Trail.

Yes Pete that was a top 10 weekend, thanks again for leading us astray and to Brad & Dennis for keeping the home fires burning, and Lefty for his backup.
On the way up on Friday with the rain increasing and the temperature decreasing, I kept double checking the gear list - Beanie Yes, Thermals Yes, Riding jacket Yes, Grip Warmers No (only for pussies) must get some. And I didn't need any of it.
Friday night was good and I stayed up till 11, after the ride on Sat I could only manage staying up till 10 but still had a good time with the boys, as you do.
Saturday morning I peeked out of the window and advised my new sleeping buddy Jake (who only snores quietly) that there was a bonza blue sky waiting to be ridden under.
The 9.30 start was indeed at 9.30 and we were off to Abbeyaed via Craigs Hut and a couple of rocks or three. We rocked along OK with no major dramas, non that anybody owned up to anyway.
Now I am going to own up to 3 offs during the weekends 230 ks. all of them on Sat. The first one was enjoyed by all on the ride. The second one was pay back for passing Scotty going up Worseldine (it happened the last time I passed Scotty as well - must be a message there?) and the third one was down to me feeling happy to be nearly back and letting the concentration wane a little and riding too slow. So enough of the excuses and back to the first one.
We were at Craig's Hut and I was getting the camera set up on the fence top for a 10 sec delay group photo. With the back pack on it was a bit of a squeeze getting between the fence rails, but it was going to be OK. Off I go - squeezing thru the rails not so very well and heading back to the group waiting under the verandah. I decided to look over my shoulder to at least be looking at the camera if I was too slow and then went ar#e over tit tripping on a rock hidden in the grass, all nicely captured digitally. The laughter lasted for quiet a while. Suffice to say the second attempt without the back pack was good. If I can push the right buttons the photos will be posted eventually.
Abbeyard was looking real good so well done to Dave and the Bee Boys. The bodies and bikes were re-fueled.
Pete bought us back a different way with a couple of grouse loamy bits to play on. It was here that Phil's 8 month old Husky 310 decided to stop playing. In the end it was a battery that didn't have the full 12 volts and without that you can forget about EFI and fuel pumps. Lefty's WR450 didn't mind having the dud battery in and kickstarted no prob,s, while Phil's Husky was OK to go, back on 12 volts Yamaha style.
Just my thoughts, but I reckon EFI riders should carry a small multi meter which would make the diagnostics a lot quicker.
Sunday was good to go at 9.30 again with some exploration on the cards. We ended up accidentally doing the Gorge of many bridges which blew everybody away, it was absolutely stunning, if not a little scary at times. For me it should remain an accidental one off that will never be forgotten, and for all you guys looking for a description of "The Real Thing" that was bloody close.
At the end of another enjoyable less rocky 80 ks we were back after getting close to "The Real Thing" again with a blast back up to Buller on the bitumin. It's always good to have a bit of company while trying to shred the side knobs off and Pete was very obliging. I was impressed with how close the old Kato stayed to the 570 on the straights, and it only needed a late braking move or more corner speed to stay in the hunt. Magic!! - with Big John and Jake keeping tabs not far behind.
Thanks to all for helping to make this a great weekend, time to go wash the bike and roll on the HCR.

i picked up Onion and headed off around 2 o'clock. the outside temp gauge said it was around 24 deg, but it felt quite humid, so i put the climate control on and set it to 21 degrees. The trip up was quite comfortable, until we started the climb up Buller, when suddenly the heater came on! I looked at he outside temp, and it had dropped to 9 deg. Mmm.. it's gonna be a cold one! We arrived about 6, to find most of the crew there, enjoying some fizzy, adult refreshments, so we joined in. Brad fired up the barbie and got to work cooking dinner. Pete had been complaining all week about frozen onions, so some fresh ones were brought. Paulie got the job of cutting them, and apparently, he hates cutting them as much as Pete hates the frozen ones!  Everyone sat down to some good tucker and drinkies!       After dinner it was time for desert, and Pete didn't let us down with his magical scones!   We kicked on till around midnight, then headed off to our various beds. |

Saturday morning dawned to a chilly but clear day, and after a hearty feed of bacon and eggs, cereal, GOOD coffee (thanks Phil) and juice. Some things you should not have to see first thing in the morning!  We packed our bread rolls (thanks Brad) and fired up the bikes. Riding through the Buller Village feels quite bazar, but we were soon well on our way. One early track made me feel like I was riding the PE again, as the rocks were jarring my teeth out of my jaw! But we cleared that, and attacked some of the other rocky trails on our way to Craig's Hut. The weather was perfect, and made for some spectacular views along the way.     The run into Abbeyard was uneventful, and we all enjoyed lunch and a rest in the shed.     The trip back was a hoot! Scooting up Woseldine and onto Dan Buffalo in perfect conditions! wow, it doesn't get any better than this! Apart from Phil's hiccup with his battery, the run back to Buller was great, culminating in that fantastic run up The Monument track, and through the snow-gums at the top. Ken has already mentioned his 'offs', and poor AJ stuffed his finger, but that was about the only injury for the day (apart from my dodgy wrist, which saw me out for Sunday). Back at the lodge, it was back to refreshment mode, as Brad and Dennis prepared dinner.   Look at all those veggies! Who said we don't eat well?    Lefty took the St Patrick's Day theme a little too far!  It was interesting to note that the young fellas (Jake and AJ) had passed out around 7 o'clock, while us 'old farts', continued on! No staying power these young blokes! Anyway, after dinner it was more mandatory scones!     And after several more beers, wine (and coffees), it was time for bed. More to follow.... |

What a ripper weekend!
Perfect weather, ideal accommodation and a fantastic selection of terrain and distance.
Special thanks to:
* Brad for organising the event, catering and accommodation
* Peter for leading the rides (and baking the scones)
* Lefty for tail-man duties and loan battery service
As Ken mentioned, during a particularly rocky hill-climb my relatively new battery decided to fall apart internally and cause the EFI engine to shutdown. A bit of troubleshooting had me swap batteries with Lefty (who has a carby bike that doesn't need a battery to run) and I was back in the action and heading for home.
Luckily Serge, Damian, Ken and Lefty were there to assist. I am very grateful to the club culture of helping out as without their help I was faced with a very long trip home. The battery gave no warning of it's failure and no amount of preparation can avoid a breakdown but you can depend on the AMTRA club members to help out. Thanks lads.
I look forward to attending the next ride...

Sunday morning was another cracker! As my wrist was no better after a night's sleep, I decided to give the ride a miss, as did AJ with his gammy finger. We all had another big breakfast, then hung around as the troops got ready to roll.    Go Seano!  Go Paul!  Go Lefty!  Go Rudi!  Go Phil!  Go Onion!  Go Kenny!  After the boys had gone, Dennis and I took off for a walk to the summit of Buller. No mean feat for a couple of old blokes like us!. It was a hard slog in parts, but the views were spectacular, and well worth the effort.      And that was the weekend. It was a bit of a bummer not riding on Sunday, but I still wouldn't have missed it, even if I didn't ride at all. A great weekend with a great bunch of blokes, so... Thanks to Brad for putting the whole weekend together, and thanks to Dennis for helping him out. Thanks to Pete for leading us astray, and thanks to Meathead for helping him out. Thanks to Lefty for bringing up the rear, and thanks to Paul for helping him out. Thanks to Paulie for making the effort to come all the way from Sydney.
