It was off to Florida for a boys weekend away. There was 4 of us in Johnny's truck with trailer behind for the 7 hour drive to Croom on the west side of Florida, close to the Gulf of Mexico.

I was having a good run at Croom, typical arm pump first section which always happens.. Only dropped 2 points in the six mile section before the petrol break. That is real good for me in sand..
Then after the petrol break, the 14 miler. I had my first KTM mechanical failure Roll Eyes about 1 mile into the section i heard a crack noise while negotiating a series of whoops. Then noticed the back end felt funny.. I pulled over thinking I had got a flat tire.. No, but I did find the spring on the shock is sitting on the bottom shock pivot....
On closer inspection it turns out the lower spring retainer has broken, taken out the retain snapring and collapsed the shock... I only had about 2" of suspension travel and ground clearance like a XR80. I finished the next 13 miles of the section and dropped a 25. But it beat me to death. So I called it a day and went back to camp, missing the last 18 mile section.

Race morning at Croom.

Mark drove down by himself in the Raceshop van, raced then drove back to Atlanta.

Bummer!

At least it was a broken bike, that looks easily fixed, that stopped you and not a broken Stewart!

There are some Jap trucks available, Ford Ranger and Chevy S10 are small..  But most people over here think of the F150 the starting point with trucks, then the F250, F350 and the equivilents in Chevy and Dodge.

Only a couple of years ago the single largest selling vehicle was the F150. Followed by the Chevy 1500 Silverado then the Dodge 1500, then the Toyota Camry.  Trucks outsold passenger cars.. I think the Camry has moved up that list recently.

I was lucky there.. Woody, who came down with us. He hit a stump or something in the undergrowth, he didnt even see it. His left foot got squashed between the log and the foot peg. .  He pulled over about a quarter mile after the impact and had to throw up.. At a road crossing he found some coarse workers and they called the medics.  He refused to go to the hospital with them... The coarse workers bought him back to the pits.. I was already there from my shortened race. I got him a fold up chair and helped get his boot off..  Nasty, his foot was twice the size of his other foot.. We got some ice and a towel and elevated the leg.. I got him a beer, his request. so after six beers and some pain killers. We pack up the trailer and head off for home. so about 7 hours later we get back to Johnny's work shop.. Load Woody's truck with his bike. It was 1.30am and Woody still had a two hour drive north to his home by himself. He got some sleep on the way back.
He broke the main bone from the big toe across the top of your foot to the ankle.. he now has a titanium plate and a bunch of screws holding it together.   OUCH.
