Went to Cobaw this morning with 15 other brave (or stupid!!)souls.....

went to bed last night - raining
woke up during the night - raining
got up at 5:30 - raining
arrived at the Calder BP - yep, still raining!!!

Magically at around about Newham it STOPPED raining - yep, i too was surprised (but happy i wouldnt be getting changed in the rain - yes i'm soft!)

We hit the trais at about 9am and at times i mistakingly thought i was in an inflattable dingy going through the rapids!! After about 15 minutes we hit the first of MANY fallen trees and discovered that as soon as you left the track you would just sink.. we turned around to take a different track and were informed of a mechanicalissue back behind us (th only one for theday thankfully)so about 10 of us stood around for a good 5 or so minutes waiting for the issue to be sorted - it turned out to be a KTM 350 on its 2nd ride with a chain that got stuck.....

Once we had regrouped we pushed on and found plenty of good tracks with one uphill section inparticular staning out - i swear someone had gathered every rock from tennis ball size to football size and scattered them in one 100m long section - it was interesting watching the different techniques and approaches to make it up this section..

The bulk of the riding was (or would have been) 4wd tracks which were covered in water channels and we spent alot of time having to go round fallen trees which once again was an ordeal each time due to the ground being so soft - some huge roost was getting thrown up!!

I had a couple of off's (nothing serious thankfully) with the worst one being just plain bizarre!! i was on a section of firetrail/4wd track and i was riding the r/h/s of the track when my front wheel just sank which sent me for a little trip onto a fallen tree!!

We hit a few small sections of s/t but they were basically flowing creeks!!

All in all it was a brilliant ride with lots of different things thrown at us (as is the Cobaw way!) and i was able to use a few techniques learnt at anglesea a few weeks back including confidently hitting a few logs (but yes, i did go round some i maybe should have tackled!)

we go back to the car park at 1:40 and i pulled the pin to come home for some chrissy shopping whilst some of the morning riders hung around to go out on the level 1 ride - allthough i'm not sure how they would have gone finding much begginer riding up there today!!

Thanks Mat for orgainising and leading the day and to Howard for sweeping

and just for good measure, i hit rain again just past Newham on the way home!!!!

Cobaw Part 2 - Level 1 Afternoon Ride

Gidday all,
Freddo Frogman & I were able to have a good sleep in before heading out to Erzberg...oops, I mean Cobaw (lucky we did; needed the extra energy)  Roll Eyes
Before even getting there, we had loads of rain, had to detour around fallen power lines, do a few river crossings on the tar road and stop to clear a fallen tree, just short of the unloading area. Wind had picked up to gale force, but like 94RMX250 said, the rain had stopped  Lips sealed.
The morning crew got back for lunch, with tales of apocolypse to tell, but nah, couldn't be that bad, could it? Our brave group headed out around 2pm, with encouraging word's from Mat, that we should be back within 3 & half hours (yeh right, i've ridden here before Undecided)
All that was said before is true, flooded trails, ruts as deep as canyons, deceiving quicksand smaller ruts which caught me out a few times (thanks Ron & Howard for the help pulling my bike out of the boggy shizen) and...then there were the tree's and swampland surrounding the paths around the tree's, which dared to swallow you whole if you went an inch of course. After poor Al falling into an abyss face first & having to head back to the carpark with a little help from wingman & co, & Mark's yammy spitting the dummy & deciding it did not want to ride anymore, the rest of us headed back to the carpark after 8k's & 2 hours to regroup. This is where Nic & I thought, enough for us, so we departed the group & did our own cruisier ride while the others all headed out again. Nic & I got back to the cars around 5 thinking, yeh, they'll be back soon...3 hours bordering 8.00 o'clock they arrived back. Wingman tells me, our fearless leader Mat decided one more challenge for the lads & lady (our new AMTRA friend Julia). Yes, you guessed it, he made them go up that hill. 1.5 hours later they all made it up  Shocked...Other excitement was Steve Wiseman saving Wingy's life by yelling out to him to "Get Out of the Way!!!!" as he see's a big tree falling down over the top of him. According to legend, Wingy developed super human powers like superman, launched himself out of the way, face first flying through the air, thoughts of 'This is It' crossing his mind, but managed to avoid being hit by inches..he reckons he felt the wind force of the 3 foot trunk  pass his head  ...phew....never a dull moment on AMTRA rides  Grin
Mat, thankyou once again for a challenging day out and thanks too, to Wingy the Tailman with David as trainee tailman/first aider.  To all the crew on the ride "Bravo".
Here's some pics he took from the day...
Cheers...Marls
ps..Steve Wiseman, I owe you big time....Fred  Cheesy

UNTIL THE NEXT RIDE, THANKS MAT....THE END   Wink

This was my first crack at an AMTRA ride, and after doing both the L1 + L2 rides, I was very impressed with the whole setup. Thanks to MattR for organising and leading the ride, and to Howard for riding sweep.
Well "that" hill managed to get us back to the carpark at 8pm, rather than 5! Despite the late finish, a good time was had by all, and I look forward to many more rides with AMTRA

I was on the black KTM 300. No, not one we covered in the morning (but probably as difficult as some we did), but this was a level one ride, and this hill certainly proved a challenge for much of the group!
I think Im glad I took an RDO today, after the late finish!
