Ride Report – Eildon - Friday 10th April 2009 By Dennis Dorman
It was Good Friday and the weather was fine, sunny and warm for a ride at Eildon with Peter Ross. The drive up there was uneventful, although we did drive through extensive areas that had been destroyed by the recent bush fires. Both Narbethong and Buxton were obviously hit pretty hard. We arrived at the large car park beside the pub in Eildon at around 8:30 for the scheduled 9:00am start. After a quick rider briefing, nine of us were off soon after 9:00 under the leadership of Peter and with his mate Darren as the tailman for the morning.
The riding was dry and dusty, with plenty of rocky sections to keep you awake as well as a couple of small river crossings to add interest, but nothing deep in the dry drought conditions. There were several track closures due to the bush fires but we still managed to find enough open to get to Mt Terrible with minimal transport along the bitumen.
It was Greg’s first ride back on a new bike after many years away from the sport, so he struggled a little with the pace of the group and some of the tight overgrown tracks near the start of the ride. He headed back to the cars after the first 20 km or so, thus he did not make it to Mt Terrible and the photo shoot.
We got to Jamieson at around 1:00pm for lunch and fuel after having completed 80 km. My 2008 WR450 took 5 litres for the 80 km. As usual we had lunch at the pub, which was quite busy. After lunch, we headed towards Kevington along the main road and past the Kevington Hilton Hotel, which looked like a popular spot for a few quiet ales for the many campers in the area. Though tempted to hang around, we went off along Moonlight Track and eventually back to Mt Terrible. From here we went back the way we came in the morning. It started to rain, just enough to lay the dust and make a few rocks a bit slippery, but by the time we got back to the bitumen transport back into Eildon it was heavy enough to give us and the bikes a bit of a wash. We arrived back at the cars at around 4:45 pm, having completed around 180 km for the day.
It was a great ride on a mostly fine day, with no significant offs or bike mechanical problems or flats. Thanks Peter for another great adventure and for getting us back to the cars on the same day we started.
There is a group photo from the ride in the Gallery ride pics.
