Title: The AMTRA Old Banger"s 25/2/12 Tanjil Pubman
Post by: Willbar on February 25, 2012, 07,37:43 AM
Will Munro Ride Leader 2000 KTM 300EXC
Phil Randle Tailperson Very old BSA $hitbox
Jeff Davey Honda XR400
Darren Lynch Honda XR350
Serge Coffa Suzuki PE250
Peter Dee Yamaha WR250
James Creasey Honda CR500 Puncture King

What an ace morning we had on the old bangers discovering new tracks in and around Moondarra and Tanjil.
We started at Wild cow tk then ortons tk and into Dwyers tk were at the end we had our first regroup and first bench racing session checking out the bikes once dirty, it was then off up Stuart mines rd and into Mervs tk and down to Cervi rd and to Blue Rock rd which we followed for a while till we ended up on Serpentine rd and had another regroup at the end taking in morning tea.
We then headed of up Seninis rd and into Ti Tree rd and this is where everything stopped. Waiting for a while with Pete, Jeff and Darren I decided to toodal back slowly to find out what was going on, about 2klms down the tk I found Phill telling James how to change a rear tube which he had strateglagy removed the valve from on the last rocky slightly rutted hill with extra large errossion mounds, as he was just putting the last bead on I returned to inform Serge who was on a corner and the others what was going on. About 1/2hr later they arrived with James running on a flat tyre once more, head for home he said so we found our way to S6tk which was one of the best ones we had done all day and worked our way back to Wild Cow tk were some of us stopping to pay our respects at the Koo Wee Rup MC club memorable which they had placed on the tree where John Spencer Jnr had died tragically last august.
It was then of to the cars for a quick change and pack up from were we then headed of up the road to the Stockyard Pub at Rawson for a few very cold light beers and some tucker.
A big thanks to my Fellow AMTRA Old Bangers and to Serge for allowing us to witness him turning his brand new PE250 into a second hand bike once again and for all his recounts of his ow $hit moments as he realized the Bikes limitations.
I did not particularly notice the heat today as we only did open tks but I did notice it on the drive home.
An update on the 300EXC, I had ridden it last weekend on the Glenaladale Pre ride and found the rear spring to be to soft and a couple of oil leaks and hard to stand and ride fast as I felt like I just wanted to fall of the back.
I replaced the rear spring with a 500lb removed from the 525 last time the suspension was done, and I set the shock in the neutral position , I replaced the sprocket shaft oil seals and bush which fixed one oil leak but still some fresh oil coming around the power valve housing to investigate .
I picked up Frankies old steg pegs which he took of his late model 300EXC on wedensday night on the way to the committee meeting and made the necessary modifications to the pegs and bike and fitted them to my old bike.
Happy 2 report the following - Got to luv them steg pegz wa la no more feeling of being thrown of the back whilst standing under acceleration . The suspension is much better now making a lot of difference to jumping erossion mounds.
Thanks to Frankie one of our fellow Old Bangers, who turned up to have lunch with us, and to everyone else for coming along and help to make the day what it was another great AMTRA Old Bangers ride and lunch. Will

5:00 AM is too early to get up for riding, but necessary as I was collecting Phabulous Phil at 6:00.  We headed off and still arrived late!

Seven souls took off amidst a plume of 2-stroke smoke, as the 'old bangers' roared into life.  The PE (on its maiden voyage) behaved admirably, although the lack of engine breaking and woeful drum breaks gave me several WTF moments!  This was the first time I have ridden a 2T for more that 30 mins, and it seems to have managed to rattle my teeth (and other body parts) out of their respective sockets.

A fairly uneventful ride, apart from Jimmy trying (and failing) to repair the same puncture twice, and Will running out of leg length at a dry creek crossing.

All bikes performed well, and a nourishing lunch and refreshments were enjoyed after 70 k's in the (oh so comfy) saddle.

Thanks to Will for putting the ride on, Phil for tail duties and the rest of the crew for bringing out your old bangers.

Thanks Will for putting on another enjoyable AMTRA old banger ride.
Luckly for us it was a bit cooler down in the valley, than at home[early in the morning at least].
Thanks to Phil for tailman duties for the day,and the old BSA is a real treat.
Clearly you can see where Yamaha got the inspiration for there WR range from ;D

Thanks for running the ride Will, and thanks also to Phil for wearing all of our combined dust back on tail duties.

Good to see (and hear) the old PE blasting through the dust - well done on the restoration Serge!

Well, for me anyway, this time the 'Old Banger' ride did what it is supposed to - it made me appreciate my newer bike even more.

At the last 'Old Banger' ride I hadn't ridden the old WR250Z for about 12 months prior, and I was so taken by the light weight and responsiveness that I immediately went and sold my WR450F and bought a newer 2-stroke (YZ250) to convert into a bush basher.

Now, compared to the YZ, the poor old WR250Z feels a bit dated and cramped, and the power delivery lacks the hit that I've become used to. Still a fun bike, but I'm more than happy with my new ride.

A fun day with a good bunch of blokes!

Peter D

P.S. Photos on the way soon...
