Title: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Tim Dykes on October 23, 2012, 05,07:19 AM Today has been a very low output day at work, might have something to do with the 665km covered in the past three days and then getting home at 10pm last night... Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Serge C on October 23, 2012, 07,15:43 AM 665 km's I guess that doesn't include driving there and back! Gotta love those big, desert distances. Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: nathanstott on October 23, 2012, 08,03:08 AM Add Al's ride the weekend before and we're up around 950 Km's for two rides!

How did the venerable XR handle the trip? Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: nathanstott on October 26, 2012, 10,52:36 PM What a brilliant weekend!! Nothing beats big days in the desert!!! Awesome riding with a great bunch of guys. Thanks Tim for putting in the effort to make it happen, it's greatly appreciated.
Please put me on the list for next year, i'm counting down the days till i get back in the desert. Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Tim Dykes on October 28, 2012, 09,30:48 AM Great photos, Tim.but some of the captions don't seem to marry up with the pics! How did the venerable XR handle the trip? I put the captions under the photo, looks okay to me. The XR did as an XR would; nothing brilliant everything as expected and I didn't get spat off it so no complaints about it. Got to love the desert, looked at that XR after 665km today and it didn't need a wash, only a bit of dust on it, it's ready to roll for next week. Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Timmers on October 28, 2012, 11,04:59 PM absolutely unreal ride Tim, thanks for organizing and running the show its a credit to you, i can not wait to to go back as it was some of the best riding i have experienced.

Got to love the desert, looked at that XR after 665km today and it didn't need a wash, only a bit of dust on it, it's ready to roll for next week. I think the XR & the DRZ were the only two bikes not to spit off their riders at some point during the three days? Rudi & Darryl may correct me here. Tim D - leading from the middle... Great ride again Tim! Nice relaxed atmosphere, and you do an awesome job of including some amazing tracks in your ride. Next year I'm keen to bring a bike with some better legs on it - sucks having to slow the DRZ down so much for the rough stuff. Tim W - the 'Flying Mongoose'... great value & always super enthusiastic (except for wishing he had taller gearing, or the blurry vision out of his brand new goggle lens) I swear Nath & I didn't plan the sand blasting we gave you on the last day... I'm still keen on seeing that footage of you following me holding that poor 250 wide open, screaming it tits off. :P Nath - "man I gotta give these goggles back to Linton, I'm riding waaaay too fast with them on" after borrowing the video goggles for a blast on the border track. Has the need, the need for speed. Loved riding with Nath on the open sandy tracks heading out the border on day two. The Z was just missing the punch out of the corners that the 449 has in spades! Rudi - Can't believe the economy he got out of that 300! Absolutely incredible. Just quietly rode that thing everywhere. Not many takers on his choice of trail snack though. :D Riding for only 18months & buying a KTM300 your first bike? Mucho respecto! :o Mark - great effort from the wounded warrior. Limping pretty badly after an off but sucked it up & rode the next day! How's the leg feeling mate? Linton - amazing ability to keep that little 250 near it's 13 000 rpm rev limit! couldn't believe how well this guy can hang with the bigger bikes in the sand. Also keen to see the footage from the goggle cam. (also mate, get Tim's footage off him - he reckons editing & uploading is beyond his tech level) Darryl - his first time in the desert & I don't think the last! ;D Bit slow on the first day getting used to the sand and then the smile got bigger on day 2 & even bigger on day 3! Crackin that 450 open & winding her up on the border track (to the detriment of his fuel economy...) Al & James - Great job feeding us & the bikes each day and also on finding someone to fit a new tyre on the trailer, on a Sunday, in the middle of the outback. :o And where the hell do you pull a belt sander from at 8.30AM on a Sunday morning? And of course doing the Vics proud in the bar @ Pinnaroo. (and Ouyen, and Rainbow :P) I'll put my few photo's up soon. Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Alwr on October 29, 2012, 08,38:48 PM Yes Lefty, you missed out. Better than my two day. This is a special area to ride and nothing else like it. Ask any of the first timers and i bet the smiles are still plastered over their faces.
Great reports and pics boys, my gear bag is packed and waiting at the front door for next year. Not happy about missing out this year!!! Al Title: Re: Desert Ride 2012 Post by: Timmers on October 29, 2012, 11,34:41 PM Timmers, better than Al's two day ??? I think I have missed out.... Looks like a great trip... :)... LEFTY!!! Well.... :) Yes it was! (you cant really compare these two very different types of rides) As Al said its a unreal place to ride its unique in its own rights, everything from the drive up to saying in pubs every night to waking up and putting your "dry" gear on every morning to constantly holding your bike pinned in top gear nailing every berm ;) yup unnnreaaalllllll Drive home sucked but. lol. |
