My take on the Daylesford Beginner Ride Day "Beautiful Sunny Day"

Over the last month or so, I've been crook, so i wasn't sure id'e make this one, but with John in my ear about helping him out i thought i should go and lend a hand.
Darren D turned up at my joint at 6.30am to pick up the 570 & RMX as Darren's bike had gone to a better place, and his new bike won't be here until August(FE 570). It was a cold Morning hovering at a mere 2 Deg, we drove through Fog most of the way, and at around The Trentham area it went down to -2 Deg with the fields looking like white sheets, you could imagine the road conditions, "black Ice" heard of it but never drivin on it, Darren and i nearly had a few Lumps in our Jocks as the car felt unstable around the bends at 80-100k's, anyway we got there at 8.30am with punters rolling in around us.
"John" When John puts on this event everythings done well, even the fire and earth moving equipment for clearing the road of bog holes etc, and even managed to build a jump in the arvo.
Not sure how many turned up but i ended up with the Beginner Beginners and that suited me fine, the rest headed off for a ride while i gave my bunch the run down. I started from the ground up with just about everything i know about Bikes, theory, safety, educate, AMTRA , and whatever questions to be answered, this went for probably an 1 hr or so , then took off for a stroll around some tracks that John had marked out ( Green easy/Basic and Blue Easy little bit harder). After our little outing it was Lunch with Snags in bread with onions, which Will and Darren had cooked up.
After lunch i did a Few legs up  Mono's as requested to entertain the Punters, and john joined in with some pretty impressive mono_ing.
Then it was back out for another loop with some more punters with no injuries in my group just a busted front Brake Level.
Some decided to retire for the day and others went outta again for another loop, and a handful of us sat around the camp soaking up the sunshine and talkin sh!T, it was a beautiful day and i hope the next one will be as Sunny and well organised.

Thanks to the Group of beginners i had for putting up with my bike dribble, hope you put some of the theory into action to make your new sport a great hobby.

Regards Pete  RMX 250/FE570

Well, the three of us left Bendigo around 7:30 and were there 45 minutes later... I reckon it dropped about 3 degrees from Bendigo to Mt.Franklin, but the CRF450x likes the cool....

Checked out the first small blue loop, ran around it a few more times with the mates and then explored a few of the other blue loops ... (They're well cut in now!)

I kept getting lost as leader as I'd miss the blue markers (especially around the creek area) ...

Great loamy / grippy terrain though, the Dunlop D952's on around 11-12PSI were awesome! Just watch out for moss!! (as one of our riders found out at the end of the day and hurt his ankle once he lost the back end).

Hi to Josh, who joined our group of three... I think he's becoming a master of log juming, which we practiced for a good session in the morning.

Those snags and onion in bread were bloody awesome after the morning ride.

Great to see the begginers getting some valuable riding tips and info on packing tool bags and medical supplies ... important stuff to know.

We took off in the afternoon as the first group to go in search for some hills .... followed the map to the end and did a few loops of some nice little hills, which had just enough to keep the fast riders honest and really challenged the beginners. I was pleasantly suprised to see so many beginners have a good go at the hills.

Great location, great food, helpful riders, well done AMTRA boys.

Oh, with the exception of driving our car in the wrong gate ... all the major roads were really well marked out with the green AMTRA and blue AMTRA signs clear showing which way to turn for the different level riders.

Big thanks to John T for the use of his land and marked loops should be first! Also thanks to all the other AMTRA members who helpped out, on and off the bikes to make the day a good one. And plant the seeds to make this a great day in the future. I enjoyed passing on what i have learnt over the years to the less season'd riders. And was intrested in what they thought were their week and strong points and tried to give assistance or give advice in those area's. Track reading, riding postion, log hopping, steep drop off's, better line selection and most importantly! If your going to drop your bike as ride leader, do it with an audenice. Also a sorry to anyone i lead astray whilst getting to learn the loops. (not so easy when your looking over your shoulder checking on your group?) Had a good and rewarding day and looking forward to putting heads together with John and others, to improve an already good day.
Cheers Al

I'd just like to thank John, and all the AMTRA helpers/organisers that made the day possible. It was perfect for me, I was very nervous when I arrived, having not ridden with a group before - it was outing number 4 on a dirt bike for me so had lots to learn, and I learnt a lot.
Thank you very much for organising the loops, marking them and providing the bbq - delicious.
I had a great day and met some great people who I look forward to seeing again.
Thanks
Annie (and Paul)

Thanks for running such a well organised and fun day.
Special thanks to Matt who showed great patience with my lack of experience and was generous in sharing his knowledge.
Altho not the aim of the day I learnt several new ways of falling off in mud patches.
Looking forward to mastering more trail riding skills.

Firstly - another fantastic day John - thankyou so much for the effort and hard work you went to, to ensure we all had a great day! I certanly appreciated the warm fire and great conversations.

My day started out well, with me spilling my morining coffee all over the front of my car - but thats ok cos it was the only spillage I had for the day. Arrived at Johns to a multitude of friendly faces, and some rater nervous looking unfamiliar ones! Wheather was perrrrrfect and after a quick splitting of the groups we were soon off.

Our first loop was great, just had to watch that snotty green moss, and Serge who was threatoning to put spikes on my seat so I couldnt sit down - Thanks heaps for that Serge, cos its surprisingly easier standing up!

A huge thanks to Al - with the comment of the day being "Nic you gotta make sure your balls are over the tank" This came after me whinging cos my arms and sholders were copping a beating from standing. Once I was standing up over the tank and hugging the shrouds with my knees - things felt alot better! Seriously Al your tuition was priceless yesterday.... any your dancing even better (Leon - ur dancing was good too mate) Next time - im not even going to stop at that creek!  ;D

By the middle of the day, we had done that loop a few times which was great. I found it was fantastic to keep practicing the trickier bits - the practice on the logs was also a highpoint for me  ;D I also found that I was able to go a bit quicker on each loop.

Also a big thanks to the AMTRA commitee for encouragiong such a fantastic day - it was great to have a chat with lots of new faces, and some more chicks which was great! Hopefully we can organise another one in the future.

Till the next ride

Nicole

Yes indeed, a great day!

I was lucky enough to stay overnight at John's (Dave's) place.  John and I took the Subaru around the track to check out the circuit that he had planned.  All looked good, until we got the Subee bogged in one of the larger puddles.  Naturally, we were at the furthest point from the property and it was more than a 3 beer walk back (which was all that we had) so we rocked the vehicle till we got it free and carried on!

The morning broke to a sunny, clear day and it was obvious we were in for a cracker.  Unfortunately, Dom was off to a bad start having hit a roo on the way in, but got over it and put in a sterling effort for the day.

Various groups went out with various leaders and were shown various things to achieve a variety of outcomes!  (That was vague!) The upshot of it all was that everyone had a ball and came away with something.

Big thanks to John for making the property available for the day, and for laying out a good selection of beginer/level 1 trails.

Also thanks to Will and Darren for manning the bbq tent all day, keeping a supply of food and coffee available for the punters all day.

And thanks also to Al, Pete, Mat, Pat, Darren and all the other AMTRA blokes who helped out on the day.  The concept of this event is brilliant and will only get better over time.

G'day all,
Ahhh, what a cracker of day for all!
3.00am start for me & Freddo & after a quick brekky at the yummy Daylesford Bakery (the cakes are to die for  ;)), we arrived at the meeting point, in time to find John clearing the bogholes & the road in, on his big Tonka Truck Bulldozer.
Geared up & didn't stop all day...you know how it is..talking, eating, riding, slip sliding, offs, omg's, laughs, crys & brilliant fun!! and yes, in the sun!!  :D
Thanks John for all the effort you & your partners in crime put in, to put on such a fun & educational ride day & for sharing this beautiful part of the world your family live in (thanks Dave  :)) AMTRA is just getting better & better!
For me, my aim was to learn more throttle & finally with big thanks to Petey Pie lending me his RMX 2 Smoker, I kept doing laps of the paddock until I had the wucker pinned & got to experience "Power Band"...WOW!!! Now that's what you call an adrenilan rush.
Thanks Will & Darren for doing lunch & to John, Pete, Al, Mat & tailsmans and to everyone that came on the day, to make this a day we won't forget in a hurry...
Here are some pics that Freddy & I took on the day...Until the next ride  8) 8) 8)  Cheers, Marls & Fred
ps...we'll see you at your next one John ;)
pps... oh yeh, I did make it to Cornerwoman...twice..  ::) (first time ever)

Hi All
I would like to thank All the AMTRA member for their help as this is not a one man job .
Will and Darren for the lunch duty.
Peter R ,Al , Mat, Serge , Leon, Pat, Fred & Marls providers of shade.
And most of all mother nature as Sunday rained from about 1am till 8.00 am which gave us time to collect all the arrows
So on the bike again with my crew Jessica and Mark
Those nice tracks on Saturday where not so nice but still had a hoot as long as I can bet a KX 100 home all is well .
I didn’t get a chance to catch up with a few of the B/L1  as I would of liked of but there is always next time
Thanks all for attending  if this any indication of the rider partition there will be D3 soon
P.S  Did any notice 3 generations of riders on the day ( grandfather father daughter son  )
John T

Sounds like a sensational day and thanks for the great pics Marls. I would have loved to have been there however other family commitments prevailed. Next time hopefully.

I think I noticed the three generations.

Would that be Big Bad Johns Dad, Big Bad John Himself and Big Bad John's Offspring?

Had a great day.  Thanks for organising this and thanks to everyone for attending and helping out.  Look forward to the next one.

Pat. That was from all the racin!!

Rudi. Was fun leading and having an easy day for a change. I think you would cope alright on a level 2 ride with AMTRA, as long as you can handle a whole day on the bike? Something we didnt get to check on the training day. I wouldnt have a problem with you having a crack at one of my level 2 Fumina rides. Glad you had a good day with AMTRA, Al
