 My take on the HCR.
I look forward every year to this Annual AMTRA event, i brings us all together to organise a ride weekend that tops my list of rides throughout the year.

Thursday:

John T picked me up at the crack of dawn, and with everything in tow for a thrilling weekend we headed up to the Block, on arrival Paul Lacy was there to great us, and within a few hours cars were rolling in and setting there tents and having a Beer or two. Boots (Ross) turned up with the Macfarlane 60Kva Generator so it was on to get it wired and tested for all the lights, Toasters and Bills 3 Phase 121 Gigga Watt Cooking Oven. We sat around the fire and talked about last Years rainy weather and sipped on Wild Turkeys n Blonds. I cooked up Some of my Marinated Pork and Roast Vegies in the Weber then within Minutes it was gone.

Friday:

As always the Generator woke me around 5.30-6ish so it was Bacon N Eggs on the Menu in Our camp. After Breakfast it was down to the small shed to get the gear to set up the scrutineering and Registration Tents so they were ready for the punters to arrive, everyone worked at getting the Kitchen, Beer stall,Food stall and Marquise ready, and before we knew it, it was time for the riders and bikes to be signed in. i hit the Cot at around 12ish and got about 1 Hr sleep.
   
Saturday:

My alarm clock (John T ) got me up before dawn , a quick Breakky and gear up as John t, Darren D Paul L, and i were doing the Pre Sweep as soon as it was light enough to take off. We headed outta the Gate at 7.15am and out into the fisrt time for this event "Arrowed course", Pat did a great job of arrowing the course and i think this idea will be back next year. We rode the course and arrived back at the Block at 10.30am, all the punters had left so we showered and sat back and enjoyed the Sunny Weather. For the last 3-4 years i had been a Post sweep and always got back after dark, so it felt a bit weird getting back so early. Around 12 ish the first bike rolled in, and not long after that there was bikes rolling constantly. Around 2 o'clock Will M came up to tell us that i needed to organise a Post Sweep for the Extension Loop, but with a few long term members on the Post sweep i knew that it wasn't gunna be an issue.
Young Will and Wade were doing a great job of logging in the riders as they came in and went back out on the Extension Loop. Before we knew it all the punters had came home, and all before it was dark " how good that".
Around 7 the Caterers turned up will the Main meal and everyone got a good feed and even some Icecream. The night rolled on and the big screen was running strong with riders stacking on Schultz Track, with massive cheers when riders threw there bikes away and hit the deck on those sharp rocks.
I hit the Cot at around 12 and got some sleep after a big day.

Sunday:

Yes once again the Generator woke me around 6ish, and we stumbled down to grab a quick Egg n Bacon Sanger and a Cuppa then geared up for the Sunday Pre Sweep, as we climbed Cobbler Track i hit the Air Horns quite a few times just to sh!t Tim and the punters off  Grin Grin Grin. As most of the tracks had been used the day before, there was a good line to follow and we got back rather quick. Back to the Showers then sat around talking about the quick ride we had, there were a few scary moment when we heard that there was a head on and a few other injuries, but with good sweep riders and 4wd back up, everything was looked after as best they could. Most of the punters took of before dark, Bill B had put together all the leftovers for us to have for Dinner and then it was on with the old HCR video's, Serge had a few Red's with Ken R and every body was thanked be Matt for putting in a good effort, then we all went to bed.

Monday: John t woke me early so we could pack up and get on the road quickly, we had Breakky at Myrtleford, washed the Bikes at the hot wash and headed home.

What a fantastic 4 days i spent at the block, once a year i catch up with so many AMTRA guys and Laugh my ass off.
"Zeb" you can do Pre Sweep in 2016 if your a good boy !!

So many people dropped into our Taj Mahal, at times it seemed like Bourke St, but everyone was welcome to sit down with a can and talk total crap for hours.

Can't wait till next year, we're bringing a Fridge freezer.

Does anyone remember hearing a huge bang at about 6.15am on Saturday. It wasn't a couple of idiots letting of a cracker. It was the little butane BBQ in our camp boiling a pot of water for a cuppa. Must have had a leak as it let go in a big way.

Otherwise had an awesome weekend. It was my first ride and I will definately be back.

HCR 2011
My take on this year's HCR. I headed up to Abbeyard on Friday morning to help with setting up and preparing for the event. Was enjoying the drive up so much I even let a police man stop me for a ticket and a lecture about my trailer that needed to be registered! And tried to refrain from laughing when after a 10 minute lecture it measured up under size for registration?
Once I arrived, unloaded and set up my stuff in Tim’s shelter I made the long trek down to the new shed. With some meeting and greeting along the way.
It was then time to make Mat happy and get stuff done, and as it is with Amtra everyone soon found or were given jobs to get ready for the punters. And as it is with Amtra the sledging and name calling began!
By dinner time and the setting up complete I made the trek back up the hill for some dinner before returning to do some odd jobs and soak in the event. 9pm and it’s a sweep riders meeting and some advice on what was need from us, then bike scruitineering and dimmy sales for a while.
Saturday morning was gear up for the days sweeping and get some beaky in your guts to be at the front gate for 9am. As we were a man down for our sweep group Wade put his hand up to fill the gap. I think we were about the second group out the gate to be sent into action. We soon arrived at a little hill on Schultz trk, were we had to negotiate some struggling riders to find a spot to park the bikes and get back down there to help. By the time we had parked the bikes Wade had realized he had a front flat tire, so he set about fixing that whilst Dave, Row and I headed down the hill. Which now looked like the D-day landings? We all got stuck in pushing, pulling and riding mutable bikes up the hill as Wade toiled away. With the next sweep team arriving Dave and I gave Wade a hand with the flat tire that wasn’t playing fair! After a few tube and sod ding around we ran out of supplies and needed to leave Wade behind to wait for further assistance.
Alone the way to our fuel stop we encountered a few more struggling riders, a bike that had ventured over the edge of a cliff and landed somewhere near Bendigo and a few other little hiccups along the way. At a regroup with Rod’s sweep grew, the news we were hoping not to hear came over the radio. “We have a rider with a broken leg” It was then time to get serious and set Amtra to work. With Cam being the best bloke around for first aid our sweep team borrowed him and headed for the injured rider. On arrival Robbo was already there with his ute protecting the injured rider until help arrived. Robbo and Cam started work whilst the rest of use slowed traffic, prepared Robbo's ute for the patient and got Ambo information sorted out.
Once we had done what we could Dave, Row and I headed for the refuel stop. On arrival crossing the river into the fuel stop, I saw Zeb in the middle of the river helping out struggling riders. (And from what I heard, he was there for hours. Bloody good effort Zeb!!) Before I swung a leg off the bike a request for help de-watering a drown Honda arrived. And like that I was back on the job stripping the bike down with help from Alistar and Father Ted explaining to the bikes owner what we were doing every step of the way. Nice touch Ted. With Serge holding bit and my lunch between bites, Dave sorted out the last few bits as I refueled and we were off.
The rest of the day was a little easier with Dave and Row having to do two laps of the loop after Buffalo Dam to find a couple of riders that had mist an arrow. A few more little stops and we were back to the block, for showers, food and lots of stories.
Lots of very wearie looking people around on Saturday night, but all still with smiles and some great stories. Also a lot more people than I thought I knew coming up to chat about the day and previous rides we had been on with them.
Sunday morning saw me offering my services again to Mat to sweep, and was looking like I was going to float through the pack sole for the day until Dave offered to join me. A few quick tweaks for Dave’s bike and we were the first sweeps out. The day was flowing very well and we were racking up the K’s. Even the river crossing didn’t seem to be cause to many issues today? So after a short break to see if anyone needs help at the river, we were back under way. Then we ran into a rider who had just finished having an argument with a tree. He was fine and had most of what was left of his bike back together. When he revealed that he had broken his front axle! There was just enough to let the first clamping nut to hold on to the axle just! Dave wasn’t too comfortable with him ridding it like that and a plan was soon hatched to make it a little safer. A socket drive was strategically cable tied into the end of the axle to buy the rider some extra time as he nursed the bike back incase the axle failed. (Would never have thought of that Dave!)
With us back under way we soon arrived on a not so good incident, two riders had had a head on. The scene was not pretty and radio communications not great, Dave organized what he could from the scene and I rode through till the next check point to make sure all the info had gotten through? Once I reached the check point the radio was alive with info and action plans to get a helicopter to the injured rider. I helped out around the check point for an hour or so before the next sweep group arrived, and with nothing more I could do from my location. I rode back to the block keeping Simon Company.
This was my first time sweep riding and it was a little more full on than I expected, but really enjoyed the experience. And really reinforced why I ride with Amtra!!
Thanks to everyone who helped out at the event. And Mat really deserves a big round of applause, for a very hard and stressful job. So till next year. Al

Great reports P-Air and Al and I agree that it was a bonza few days away in perfect weather and with some great riding and good company. I'm happy to say that I completed around 280 km sweep riding, arrowing and check point duties without falling off once on those sharp rocks - slow and steady gets the job done sometimes.

That was a yummy roast pork on Thursday night, thanks P-Air for taking me away from my instant noodles. As usual the roast on Saturday night was very good. The bar trade was very busy, so should help a bit towards a good profit this year. After some further packing up and cleaning up the sheds I was on my way home by 11 am on Monday.

What a Great Weekend, Loved the Weather, the New Shed and the Green High Country. The last time I saw the big hill over the river it was mostly black, the transformation is fantastic, we just had to have that rain boys but I'm glad it stayed away this year.

Saturday morning at the gate by 9.45am for post sweep meant the ear plugs went in for a sleep until 8, nice start to the day.

Things went real well until Schultz where a slight indiscretion by a team member bought a bigger one from me. We both should have gone straight down for another run especially with my 'new bike' needing a replacement battery.

We soon had a system going for picking the arrows off the trees etc and depositing them into Frankies 'pouch' while other team members leap frogged past. I slowed or stopped on a number of occasions just to look at the views- GROUSE!!!

On we went catching up to the sweeps in front of us as they worked for the customers and taking over so they could move on.

It went a bit slow in the morning and we thought here we go again for getting back after the roast, but in the arvo it went quicker and time was had for a shower before the tucker.

Sat night finished early with my body needing a rest and Dennis D and I deciding it's a long way to come and not ride for a second day.

Sunday down at the gate a bit late with the mid sweep start time changed but let out eventually for some more great riding.

Fairly quiet really with just a bit of work to do including helping one de-water. We were mixing in and out of other sweep groups when Pommie Mat pulled me over "You got a KTM sprocket?" he asked "Sure Have" I replied. We soon had a very happy customer who would have missed out on the second half of Sunday. Thanks to Zeb for that good 17mm ring spanner - must get one on board somewhere.

Oncoming traffic gave us a few reminders of why it's always best to keep left if you can't see around the corner, and some times even that is not enough to avoid a head on - hope the guy in the chopper gets well soon.

Just stopped to help some guys on a hill and jumped back onto my bike with a flat rear, "Well ain't that justice". It was soon fixed with the help of Dennis & Rob C, a new tube went in with no patch going to cover the 6" split down the centre?

More BONZA scenery to look at and rocks to ride over. Maybe I should have done more rock watching to avoid a front wheel puncture. Quickly changed but flat again within 5 ks - BUGGER!

Luckily Wade had a tube at the last check point so I was able to enjoy the last little blast to base.

Sunday night was good with reds to share with Serge, Dennis and Pat, don't forget your shout next year Dennis - but 4 bottles might be too many -nah sod it, no problems.

Well done to all concerned, hope the customers had a great time and see you all next year.

What can i say? That was my first HCR and i was impressed!!!

I stayed in Bright with the grand folks on Thursday night and after seeing my sick granny in hospital on the Friday morning it was time for me to find this mysterious place called the Abbeyard that ive heard about.

I arrived there about 2ish after following in a 4wd with bikes on the trailer (hoping i was following the right people). I set up camp and went and had a chat to a number of people and before i knew it i ended up giving Geoff a hand and the registration tent. It wasnt until long before heaps of riders checked themselves in and after a number of frothies and darkness it was time to wrap things up and call it a night but that wasnt before a few more bevys and a yarn to some more people.

Saturday morning rolled around and i found out that i was helping on the fuel stop and after a quick bite it was 9am and finding out i didnt have to be at the fuel stop until 10:30 myself, Dave and Zeb took a big detour and did some of Saturdays, Sundays as well as some extra tracks that Dave knew of. We caught saw some parts of the extra loop bunting out of place and fixed it up and stumbled across the first pre-sweep group for a quick word and arrived at the fuel stop just after 10:30 with Zeb tackling the river crossing first (taking the deep way) and Dave and myself taking the slightly non deeper way Roll Eyes. After helping a countless number of bikes out of the river and seeing approximately 15-20 bikes drown it the day was drawing to an end (with my bike choosing to loose guts on hills).

The next morning rolled around and i was due to go in a mid sweep group but found that my bike didnt want to start so off came the tank and did some minor repair work it was finnally going but not without headaches as the problems did not stop throughout the day (at the mechanic now so up yours you blue turd). I finally caught up with Rossi and Matt joined us and off we went. We were going quite well with not too many hold ups and eventually stopped on a corner and heard about a head on not far on from us but we allowed to continue to the spot where it happened (im experienced at dealing with cars having head ons but bikes never before so i didnt know what to expect). With the injuries still being serious but not as bad as expecting we headed on. Not long later i was waved down to help a bloke with his flat front after he had already used his spare tube so i gave him my extra heavy duty spare that i had (never got a replacement back but i remember faces mister Wink) and we got on our way. About the 85 k mark i hit reserve and was forced to fly down schultz in 5th gear and rode the rest in top gear at 55km/h so with 20ks in reserve and not having to use the spare litre in my camelbak i was happy that i made it back to the Abbeyard. With more stories and good quality HCR videos what seemed like when i was born  Tongue the bedtime was due and the next morning off i went back to melbyville.

I was extremely impressed with the running of the event and next one i will put my hand up to help out without even thinking about it. Special thanks to Matt and Geoff for everything they did as well as everyone else who played a part in making the weekend possible. Everyone was good to talk to and noone hesitated at giving at hand for anyone where it was needed and i cant wait until the next time it happens.

Nah its not yet mate, its in with the 2-wheeled surgeons at Main Jet which Matt Richmond recommended and when i spoke to them i seemed happy with them. The bloke said that the problems ive been having with it lately doesnt make sense so hes having a thorough look over everything and reckons it should be ready by Wednesday. Will let you know what they find Smiley

I drove up to Abbeyard on the Thursday before the event this year.  That way, I figured I would have the whole of Friday to help set-up for the HCR.  I arrived at around 7:30 (after stopping at Myrtleford for dinner) just in time to settle into a few fizzy, adult refreshments and a yak with other like-minded members.

Friday:

Friday dawned sunny and DRY!  How good was this!  The first HCR in three years that I haven’t had to put on my gum boots!  Anyway, we walked down to the shed, where Pete and Big John set to finalizing the electrical work on the shed and hooking up the generator.  Everyone was busy doing something.  I grabbed a posse of blokes and headed down to the front gate to erect the sign-in and scrutineering tents.  We got the first one up without too much drama, but then John, Pete and Darren came down to ‘help’ put up the second one.  It all got silly from here!  Seems there was a competition going to see who could cable tie who to the tent!  After much frivolity, the tent was up, so the others put up some bunting to direct the traffic flow through the tents.  Quick shade went up by the gate to shelter whoever was standing there, then back to the shed to put up the final tent to cover the barbies.  Lunch time, and still no rain.
After lunch, I got a group together and we stuffed the show-bags.  While this was going on, a constant stream of punters was filing through the gate in anticipation of the ride.  Once we had the bags completed, they were taken to the sign-in tent and registration was up and running.  This was around 3:30 and the guys were rushed off their feet in an initial onslaught.  Back at the shed, we prepared the kitchen area of Bill’s arrival, organized the bar and snacks area and opened for business.  By 7:00 the joint was jumping and still no rain.

Saturday:




Some things you shouldn't have to see first thing in the morning!

Saturday morning we had brekky (pre-sweeps were already gone) and I moseyed down to the gate to wait for Damian Ashenhurst (Dirt Action), who was driving in from Bright.  Once he was sorted, I assumed my position at the gate check point (along with Mat and Will) and the event was on!





 

Everyone was out by 9:30, so I jumped into the showers and then went off with Mat to the lunch stop to check things out. 





All was good there, so onto the re-fuel to watch some carnage at the river crossing.

I think he's missing something!

The area was littered with diss-asembled bikes in various stages of de-waterment. 




News was emerging of a rider with a broken leg, and when we saw the ambulance, we knew things weren’t good.  Robbo was transporting the rider down to the lunch stop to rendezvous with the ambulance, so Mat and I went back there to assist.  All were congregated when we arrived, so we helped slide the guy onto a back board and the Paramedics did the rest.  I jumped into Ian’s car (along with Dennis), and we went into Myrtleford to report the accident with the Police.  We had lunch in town and then headed back to the Yard, arriving about 3:30 to find that most riders had returned.  I chatted with people at the gate for a while, when Will came up and said the tail sweeps were in and he was missing two riders.  He walked around the camp and eventually found that that they had somehow snuck in without being marked off.  This meant that everyone was present and accounted for by around 5:00.  A record, and still no rain!  Saturday night lapsed into the usual hot meal, drinks, prize draw and raffle, followed by videos and more drinks.  A top night was had by all, with the only problem being the generator shutting down (twice), but with the collection of mechanics and electricians assembled, it was up and running in no time.



One of our sponsors (Hydrocell) donated 2 of these pressure washer units.  We used on to clean the radiator on the generator!



Sunday:

Sunday morning I was lucky enough to ‘support’ ride, so I grabbed Brad and headed out with Damian so he could get some more shots for the magazine article.  We took off up Cobbler Lake Track, and stopped at the helipad to take in the awesome views.  We turned off (following the brilliantly arrowed course) down Dan Buffalo Divide playing cat-and-mouse with Damian as he revelled in the excellent riding conditions.  Onto the Abbeyard Road, then crossed the ford where we stopped to watch some more river crossing carnage.  From here it was up the SEC Maintenance Track (Power line Tk), to a hard right at Buggery Tk.  Damian flew past us again, but as we cleared an erosion mound, we were flagged down by a couple of guys who pointed out a downed rider.  Brad and I set to work and got him sorted.  Fortunately, his accident had already been reported to the next control, so not long after we arrived, so did Robbo (again)!  Now I know why he always buys white vehicles.  We strapped Geoff up and loaded him into the car and Robbo took another drive into Myrtleford.  Brad and I then continued along into Camp Creek Tk, where we were flagged down again, this time by Dave.  There had been a head-on accident between Bruce (one of our sweeps) and another guy who was just out for a Sunday ride with his mate.  The guy was looking pretty bad, with a blood blister the size of a golf ball, hanging under his eye.  Soon after we arrived, so did Cam and some more sweeps, so we left the scene to them and continued on.  It wasn’t long before we were flagged down again, this time by a rider with a flat (with no spare or tools!)  Brad sorted him (I watched and supervised), then we continued along Buffalo range Tk and into Schultz’s Tk for the final assault before home.  By the time we got back to camp, many folks had already left, but those that I caught up with were very happy with their weekend and the way the whole event was run.
Sunday night is always my favourite part of the HCR weekend.  It heralds the end of it!  And gives the organizers a chance to sit back, relax and get comfortably re-freshed!  We dined on left over burgers and dummies, sampled a bottle of wine (or 3), watched some more videos and had a great night.  Mat made a bit of a speech and thanked all the volunteers for their hard work over the weekend, gave away some more show-bags and declared the event a success (and over!)

Monday:

Monday morning (those lucky enough to stay over), started the pack up routine.  We had actually done a fair bit on Sunday evening, so we were all away fairly early.  I know I left the property around 10:30 and Mat and Geoff were not far behind.
And that’s it!  It’s over for another year!  Roll on 2012.
