Title: Abbeyard 22/11-23/11
Post by: Robert James Crisp on November 23, 2008, 11,37:48 PM
4 of us headed off on Friday afternoon looking forward to riding the High Country around Abbeyard. The weather looked reasonable and the road in was surprisingly a little dusty after the rain over the previous couple of days.We set up camp in the shed along with a very friendly family of mice and settled down to have a few beers and talk the usual load of rubbisb. At this stage the weather turned nasty and we had to adjourn to the shed.Things weren't looking too good for a ride to Wonnangatta on Saturday! The rain continued on and off for most of the night. We woke in the morning to find very damp riding conditions and to be greeted by occasional light drizzle. After a good feed and a check of the river depth it was decided to give Wonnangatta a miss and instead head to Cobbler. We encountered fog, drizzle, cold, sleet and very slippery red clay.Ater 7.5 km's I came around a bend to find Steve lying on the ground writhing in pain.He had lost it in a minor rut that threw him into the bank.He had smashed his knee on a rock. After checking on him it was decided to go back and pick up the 4WD to pick him up.He couldn't bend his leg but could put weight on it if he kept it straight. The problem was he tried to bend it getting into the 4WD and ended up flat on his back writhing in pain again. When we got back to camp (10.30am) a decision was made to pack up and take Steve to Wangaratta hospital.Back at Wangaratta hospital the diagnosis was a shattered knee cap.He was operated on Sunday and will be in hospital for about a week and will have his knee in a splint for 6 weeks.
Our riding for the weekend came to a total of 15.3km's.
It wasn't exactly the most adventurous weekend.

Riders were -

Shaun C. WR450 Ride leader
Doug H. XR400
Steve M. WR400 smashed knee-cap
Rob C. XR400 Tail man

Was he wearing knee guards?

Sorry to hear your weekend did not go to plan.

Hi Rob,

Be sure to pass on the best wishes for a speedy recovery from all at AMTRA.

Incidents like this highlight the importance of riding in a group. Without the help of you and the others he would still be laying there!
