Hi I'm in the process of selecting my first bike. After reading comments posted by another member regarding the selection of his first bike, I'm looking at an XR, TT, or DR.

Could anyone tell me, do most of the AMTRA rides require riders to have a recreational registered bike only or would it be wiser to obtain full registration? Cheers Duncan.

Duncan,

Welcome aboard!

Your choice of a DR, XR or TT is a sound one.  All models will give you great service.  If buying second hand, go for as new a model that you can afford.  This will ensure that you get as many 'up-to-date' features as possible.

With regard to rego, I'd suggest going full-rego option.  Most AMTRA rides will go through a town of some sort, and rec reg doesn't allow this.  Some 'country coppers' may turn a blind eye to this, but I rekon it's a safer bet.

Once you have a bike (and rego), book yourself into an AMTRA ride and start having fun!

Xr's are nice, but not electric start.  You will like electric start when stuck on a hill. You will get stuck on a hill.

DRZ is a nice reliable bike without too many vices.

TT-R's have a good rep, and they a blue which is a common afflication.

Really - not much between them so pick one that feels better for you.  If they are too high you can get rear suspension lowering links, to use until you get confident then put the original links back in.

As far as rego, I only have rec reg and it can limit where you can go and what rides you can do. If you are going to ride every weekend and some in between then full reg is worthwhile - you will want to go places that you can't with rec reg.  If only riding once or twice a month accepting the limits and using rec reg leaves money in the bank.  If you get a bike that can be fully registered then you can choose to change it later.

Hi,
Two mates of mine have XR400's both are great with some quirks to starting them when they are flodded or cold.
With knowledge its gets easier.
The DR's have a lower seat which can help if your vertically challenged also they have electric start.

My first bike was a TTR with electric start, very forgiving.

When I went to look at a bike two years ago, as I am not fit I ruled out non electic start bikes, so it came down to price between the DR and TTR. Up to you!

Rgds,

Thanks for the advice all. Hope to be riding with you soon.

By the way, checked out several AMTRA rides on YOU TUBE - looks like a lot of fun....for promotional purposes is there any chance you can place a hyperlink on the AMTRA web site that directs the user to the videos located on YOU TUBE? Just a thought.

Cheers,
Duncan.
