I have an 08 WR450, you do get a bit of crap in the air box but I think it's due to location of a inlets.

I occasionally find leaves, rocks, pine cone needles and stuff in there but it's not to bad.

I don't think it matters which one you buy but get the newest you can afford.

How about a nicely set up FE550E. You will never get stuff in the air box cus this well designed machine does not have one. My 04 550 is  a dream to ride and will leave any 450 for dead but with controlled power that produces grip not wheel spin and it will take you 150ks on a tank of premium. It's never been thrashed cus theres no need to.
Give me a call on 9783 9395. It's yours for $6500 and comes with the original new plastics, all the books and manuals plus some spares.

Adam
I have 07 450EXC and love it but both the EXC and WRF 450's are both excelent all round dirt bikes and you will not be disappointed in their performance or handling and there is mouniains of after market products available for both. I have ridden Kennys FE it is a great bike too.

Adam,

My first question would be 'why do you want a 450?'

A WR 250 has bags of power (about double the output of your XR), and you won't spend all day hanging on for for grim death!  As Wade said, heaps of after market bits are available, and they are a little less expensive that the 450.

I went from a DR 250 to the Yammy, and I love it.  I've got an '07 model, and have had no probs with it.  If your buying new, chat to the dealer about it and they'll probably suggest the same thing.

Anyway, food for thought!

If you can, I'd buy new, that way you know you are the only one who has farted on the seat!

Adam,

For someone your size the FE550 should be seriously considered, and it has a known history that I am sure would be a good one. At the price it leaves a lot left over compared to a new'un. I would expect a KTM to be more race oriented and the WR-F stock be more weekend trails so depends on what riding you want to do as to which way you go.  Why not get on an AMTRA ride and see if a few members will let you sleaze a stint on their ride to find out.(Serge, I reckon Ken is too much of a gent to be sitting down when farting so the seat should be A1.)
