Keith

VicRoads are the people to see to get the TAC permit.
Go to them and ask for a TAC code 471 for a recreation vehicle that has less than 3 wheels. It should cost about $60 -$70 for 12 months cover after you've payed stamp duty etc.
Don't let them try and tell you that "what you realy want is" because the costs go up with capacity.
Ask to have them send out a renewal after 12 months.
If they ask tell them the recreation vehicle will only be used on private property with the owners permission.
Expect to get a blank stare when you ask as they don't do this type of thing often.
You'll need make of vehicle, VIN, colour that sort of thing.
I believe these permits are intended to cover farmers using vehicles on their properties and that these vehicles aren't used on public roads.
If you look at the link below (from the VicRoads website) half way down the page you'll see "Recreation Vehical less that 3 wheels" and the code for that is code 471

Title: Rec Reg is probably cheaper !
Post by: Paul Smith on October 03, 2007, 12,12:05 PM
Hi Keith,

Tim has done a Rec reg on his daughters bike. That is probably a much better idea as it gives more options further down the track. It can be done easily and pretty cheaply. Tim can tell you how !

So you have two DRZ's and a minibike ? Awesome !

yes i have got a collection going.
I got my 8 year old son one of these 50 cc mini bikes from China, for $406.
I think it is good value, 4 gears, front disk, rear drums, electric and kick start. looks like it was put together well, goes upto 60 km. So far he has been riding around the house and now he is ready for some rough stuff.
I am looking at joining The frankston MX club too

Dont you still need a licence for REC reg?

However it does not have head and tail light.

If the bike is Rec Reg, that's fine to use on the club property.

You don't need a licence to operate it on private property, you only need a licence if it's used on the road network.

To get Rec Reg it will need headlight/taillight, chain guard and you have to take it to VicRoads.

With the permit you just take the details of the bike to VicRoads.

Hi Keith, How did you go with the permit ?
I was at Vicroads in Dandenong this morning trying to get one for my daughter. Tim was right, a very long blank stare ! The lady there had no idea, after 20 mins she said I needed the following : Make / Model / Engine No. / VIN / Year. I will get all this info & try again next week !

I have been too slack, and by the looks of it, i better get cracking. It took me an hour to find a number on the chasis, i assume it is the vin number now from what you say i got to find an engin number if there is one on these SSR bikes. Let me know how you go, I am in Sydney till friday night.
Where in Dandenong is VIC roads?

Hey Keith, Vicroads in on Greens Rd near the railway line.
My daughter has an Atomik Avenger 125cc, Chineese thing, $700 brand new of Ebay ! Anyway, I found the VIN on the left side of the head stem & the engine no. near the left peg (after 10 minutes of looking!). I hope this helps, and I catch ya at Abbeyard on the long week end.

David for information: TAC Mini Bike Cover

50cc-59cc     =   $68.20
60cc-125cc   =   $233.20
126cc-500cc =   $315.70

We have had MANY meetings with TAC and these prices are subject to where the bike is garaged.

I have many meetings with Vic Roads and TAC about this cover and we are well informed!

Regards

Title: TAC COVER
Post by: Dirtpilot72 on October 13, 2007, 09,43:09 AM
David and members,

The permit is actually officially known as "Non registered vehicle TAC cover" The number 85 referes to the Vic roads form number.

Therefore possibly some Vic Roads staff may know it as TAC 85 cover.

Members need to be careful at Vic Roads, that they dont end up with the more common "Unregisterd Vehicle cover" that allows you to drive a unregisterd car/bike on the roads.

So when members enquire at Vic Roads they need to state that they require a "Non registered vehicle TAC cover" and or "TAC cover 85". Doing both will hopefully get you what you need.
