Title: Security Post by: Aaron on January 26, 2008, 02,24:52 AM Like many forums on the net we are having some issues with people posting crap on our site.I think a good way to cut this down would be to put in a amtra related question in register section.Bit of a Amtra/dirtbike related quiz.Something local would be good as this poo is probably coming from O.S.Any other ideas?

This is not really rocket science, ten thousand other web sites work this way. It is our web site, and we the members should be able to dictate how it is accessed. Put a motion to the meeting and I will second it. I too have no interest in the nightly frolics of Paris Hilton and others. Phil R. If we did that then we'd stop people asking questions about the club. That is counter productive.
Anyone can register at DBW and post whatever they want to. The key is that the website is moderated regularly and spam posts and topics are deleted immediately or so quickly that they appear not to exist. The moderators then suspended the dodgy user's accounts stopping repeat attacks. Most of the posts come from overseas so a couple of questions could be good idea. We seems to be avoiding the fact that if the site was moderated properly then these posts would not be up long enough for anyone to notice an issue. The moderators need access to remove spam posts and then they need to do it. If spam posts lingers then the moderators are clearly not doing thier jobs and need to be replaced with people who will. the problem is i have a job im a mechanic, and so dose the rest of the committee. im not sittign infront of the computer all day to delete spam. dirt bike world and other fourms have mega amounts of members whose cut gets devided to pay people to check for spam the ball is rolling on getting ride or atleast reducing the problem but as were getting the service for free we shouldnt be to picky on when its done :idea: Title: Security Post by: Aaron on January 27, 2008, 11,25:27 AM I think our forum has been added to a list of easy targets.Making it harder to register may help.I don't think locking it up is a good idea.

There are heaps of methods out there for preventing spam posts. several popular way include timing the registration form, robots complete these forms in a mater of seconds, humans do not, also pattern matching band phrases and sites, another is human image check and email verification, unfortunately this site is getting old and not all these methods can be easily integrated. There are far far too many forums on the Internet for any group of people to spend all day creating accounts and posting spam links. They key is to implement a measure that will interrupt the algorithm...some of which I posted in the thread linked above...as well as requiring a validation email to activate the account. Locking forums down so private members only can post anything is one simple idea, but private forums drive up the work of moderators, and closing off forums all together to anyone except members just isnt necessary. General access forums for a site like this is a good idea IMHO. This site has already over 2000 members and having private forums only could detract a lot of potential new, genuine members. Implementing something simple and smart once in a while (because spam bots WILL improve their signup methods) saves plenty of headaches in the long run. I joined this forum and posted a few things to see what the members were like before I joined AMTRA, and that was before going to a club meeting. It was then a while before going for an AMTRA ride, which I thoroughly enjoyed and intend to get on some more. So the web site can add new members and I don't think it should be locked to members only - that is what the members section is there for. But we should get rid of the spam accounts. Many are easy to spot - no contact email and a dodgy website. If it takes a volunteer them PM me to let me know what is needed. Mat.
