I have purchased a KTM 300 going on various peoples opinons, and have now done 570km's on it and I am discovering that this bike is just to much for me to handle, i can bearly get it onto the power band before it starts to get away from me, I watched peter r and Mark ride it on the good Friday Eildon ride and quickly realised i just can't make it do what it is suppost to do... I am considering going back to the shop and looking at trading down to a KTM 200 exc...Dose anybody agree, or am i better to try and persist with the 300...I have been riding for approx 3-4 years and am nearing 40yrs old...not 20yrs old..I like its low torque and elec start, but just can't handle it when it gets going...

I am 45 this year and got back on the bikes last june , you dont have to ride a bike on the edge just becasue its capable of it. I have a 250 2 banger and will never be able to ride it to its full potential but i enjoy it tremendously. you wont damage your KATO just becasue you are not ringing its neck .

If you hate it and dont enjoy riding it then consider changing over but even though she is in smick condition you are gunna do a crap load of dollars.

Play with the valve springs you have three to choose from and a mapping switch to boot , get Top gear to tame it down for you if you dont know how ....

By the way i thought you rode well on FRIDAY didnt see you three hours behind the main group dont be to hard on yourself Grin  Look at me i get on the pipe but look like a rag flapping around on the seat at least you look in control ..  Grin

Keep the Kato, get it toned down with the mildest power valve spring and work on where you are having trouble with it.

I can't ride either of my bikes (4T's) to their full potential but it does mean there is more there for me to look at when I get there.

Also consider suspension tuning to suit you and your riding level, it may make the bike a lot easier to handle when you do get on it.

Pick where you get on it, and then move on from there.

run passive mapping green power valve spring 14 50 gearing jet it lean and set suspension soft front and rear and enjoy the low down grunt a 200 hasn't got the grunt you will need to be more aggressive with a 200 and give yourself at least  12 months to get used to it here ends the lesson Grin im 58 and wouldn't ride anything else  cheers craig.

Hang onto it.I only ever rode 250,s (and not very well either) b4 buying a 450, first three rides had me in tears(way to fast , way to bouncy and to tall)and wanting to sell it off.After lots of advice ,of how to tone it down a little from fellow amtra members ,eg sprocket sizes,suspension mods,i now luv that ikea bike and ride it like a demon.It took a good 6 to 12 months to get used to it. good luck with your decision - seano

Thanks for all the advice, I am going to Top Gear and enquire re: power spring, sprocket, suspenion etc..

You can adjust where it comes on the pipe.
or even change the spring.

It sounds like you are happy with the power just not the band, if so it just needs some adjustments for you.
