Hi Adam, steping up to a 450 theres a lot of diferences
power weight handleing
all big issues, but the bigest issue is the crf450's and there valve issues, i know people that have done valves at 1,000km and it cost them about $1,000
id realy look into it and dont take what the dealer tells you try a inderpendant shop for advise on it..

as for 250 - 450 i just went from a ktm 250 to a wr 450
and im loving the extra power straight line probly not much quicrer at all but the grunt out of the corners and the ability to leave it in a higher gear up a hill makes it well worth while.
the weight issue yes its heavy not on paper buy the books but the enersia on the motor makes it feel heaver to ride
and by the end of the day it dosnt feel like you have raped a little 250 by reving it all day
but my arms let me know im on a 450 again
so all in all either bike has its fors and againsts
id say get the 450, but if your only 70kg id get the 250
if your round 95 like me go the 450,

Hell David and Adam,

Well I fixed my clutch problems on the TTR David by getting a new clutch and bike to go with it.  I ended up with a new WR450f, and I absalutely love the thing it has soooo much power compared to the TTR it out handles it and feels lighter to ride, probably because its about 15kg lighter.

I toyed with a wr250f vs 450 for a long time, and for the first few hours with the 450 I was starting to think I made a big mistake.  But now I'm use to it I wouldn't swap it for all the 250's in the world.  The power they have climbing a hilll.... what can I say you have one as well!

good move you wont go wrong i just checked my tappets on mine befor the hcr and they were still like new
the oil comes out golden after 500km
filter every 1000km, are you going on any rides soon?
have to catch up. ive got a level 2+ ride coming up in a few weeks at rawson its got 2 hills one has a way around the others pritty easy as long as its not raining

I'm about 95 kg and 6 foot 5.

Do the 05/06WR450F's have any known issues?

I guess I'm looking at the range of 450s, but I focussed on the Honda initially because they were going to trade in the XR.

Any idea how much the 2005 XR250L would be worth? It's only done 590KM! and it's never been dropped... The dealer reckons he'll trade it in for $6000 which sounded reasonable.

I loved the WR250F...it would be nice to step up to the WR450F (although an 07 with the alloy frame would be even better but too expensive for me Tongue)

Not to sure what there selling for check out ebay and the tradeing post for a $$$ value
is a xr250L a normal xr whats the L for?
take it to a yamy dealer and see what there offering

as far as i know the 426 yamys had timing chane issues

the later 450's spit out a oil plug in the front of the head or something, denid dorman put a fix for that in a amtraction i can find it for you if needed.

thats about all i know on them id ask a bike shop like power house in packenham pauls pritty switched on with what goes wrong with the bikes.

make sure its got electric start, may not bother you in the show room but on the side of a hill after your 4th attempt it will.

I was thinking about doing a DBW ride at Moondarra this Sunday, I'd do Fumina on Sat but I'm working Sad

Hello Adam,
            I only got my bike on Friday so havent done much to it.  I bought some radiator braces/guards, the bike came with bark busters, alloy bars, oversized foot pegs, plastic bash plate thing.

I'd probably look at getting an aftermarket bash plate and maybe an exaust down the track.  I'm not really looking to get more power out of it.  I'm still thinking about getting some frame proctectors, but theres no paint to wear off the frame because its aluminium.

One of the dirt bike magazines out now has a big write up on all the 450's in Australia head to head.

Hi Adam,

A person I work with is selling his 04 WR-F 450 for around $7000.  It is listed on bikesales.com.au and his name is Jeremy.  He decided to go from that to an 06 YZ250F with a rec reg kit.

I guess until you have ridden a few 250's and 450's it is hard to compare and work out what suits your riding style.

For now I am happy with the DR-Z400 but it is on the heavy side of things.  Just wish it had the E at the end.

ADB had a 450 "shootout" in the March edition, I think. This month it is the big bore enduro's.

I've got an 06 WR450, had it for nearly two years, went for it over the CRF due to the better reliability.  The extra torque of the 450 has got me out of trouble on hills a few times where other guys say their 250 just quits.  I don't think it is as good as a 250 in the really tight stuff but I like to ride a mix of everything and it allows me to be a bit lazier with gear changes.  I am religious on air filters and oil changes and it hasn't given me any trouble.

Hi Adam,

The 04 is electric leg, and Paul explained why the YZ cam, though not sure how much extra maintenance that would be.  No other damage or work needed.  I am tempted to buy it but that is spending money I shouldn't.

As for trade in, the main point to you will be changeover cost which can often cloud the issue of how much the bike is and what you are getting for the XR.  They are likely to use any obvious damage as a lever to convince you it is worth less money.

New XR250's are cheap, and the new KLX250 is only $6500 plus the on roads.  This will hurt what you can sell your bike for. So a small loss on trade in may be worth avoiding a long wait to sell.

As for where the second hand WR-F's are, there does not seem to be one place that has them always "in-stock".  Check out bikesales, motorcycle trader (our HCR sponsor) etc to see who has one worth looking at.

Mat's pretty much wrapped it here. Asking me to reccommend a dealers is a hard thing. The only dealers I reccomend are Bikemart (for accessories) and Valley Force motorcycles - but they don't have many (if any) Yammys.

Probably the best people you could could and should talk to are customers of your local Yamaha & Honda dealers to see what they think of the service.

My local Yammy dealer (Clipstone) is one of the cheapest in Melbourne. They are not known among my friends for having good service or after sales support though. In fact I was not impressed in any of the dealings that I had with them. Others have been happy though...
