Title: Would you buy a crf450x?
Post by: kurnol on July 18, 2011, 12,07:11 PM
Had my 07 CRF450X for 4 weeks now. New to trail bikes
Great price $4000, needed new chain and sprockets, battery plus bash plate, still great price!

First weekend out riding others told me valves needed adjusting (only way to start it once hot was to bump it)
Checked and found left intake valve almost closed up, so re-shimmed.
Second weekend riding same problem again, once hot would not start with either button or kick start.
Back in the shed realised the hot start lever not working correctly so stripped and cleaned.
Fired her up and let engine warm up for 10 mins. Stopped and started 3 or 4 times on 2nd/3rd kick (battery still flat from weekend) oh happy times.
Clean up tools etc, give her one more try before bed. On third kick snapped right hand crankcase!!!!! and cover :(
$700 in parts so far.
Removed engine from frame and sent to Mornington honda to rebuild plus get stainless valves done at same time.

That great price has quickly turned into a not so great price of around $6500!!

On the plus side did love my first 3 outings at trail riding

ps would I buy another? probably not

pps I'm told it will be ready thurs which gives me friday to get her going again ready for Dayleford Saturday.

Seen plenty of CRF's with knackered valves, but breaking an engine case from kicking it over is a new one !

When I took it to the shop the mechanic said he had seen a few with the crankcase cover snapped around the kick start but never the crank case too.

if you managed to get the motor out of the frame (not easy) you have done the hard bit. next time try doing the rest for yourself. get the parts from the states for halve the price and pay yourself for labour in jimmy cans.

That was the plan but time is not on my side currently, any future rebuilds I will have a crack.
Your right about getting the motor out, involved lots of colourful language and removal of skin.

Cheers
