Be hydrated.. Several days before a big ride, start doubling your water intake. If you are not peeing clear fluid then you need more water. Keep alcohol to a minimum. Having a hangover on the ride day will not be fun.
Being fit helps too, the more time you spend in the saddle the easier it will get.. I actually try to stand a lot if possible, my knees start to ache when sitting while riding after a while.
Good carb meal the night before, pasta or something like that.
Will take all of that on board stew thanks  , the hyrdation interests me casue I am a profuse sweater and tend to overheat pretty quickly.

I also like to drink a litre of Pedialyte per day coming up to a big ride, Pedialyte is used for sick babies to stop them from dehydrating, it is formulated to be the exact replacement fluids for your body.. Should be able to find this at a chemist or supermarket. I like the unflavoured stuff. The flavoured stuff I find a little sweet. Same with Gatorade or similiar drinks, you can mix them with water to take the sweetness away..
At health food shops you can find a variety of hydration products, premixed and powders. Hammer Nutrition has a lot of good products.  A good cycling shop may carry nutritional supplements. People who road race bicycles are usually big into nutrition and hydration.
Another thing to consider is recovery drinks and food, especially if you have another day of riding or you just want feel better the day after..

To do a big ride or a hard one, it's got a lot to do with how you think. After the first day, don't think to much about the hard stuff you did that day, when you start thinking poo I'm tired, how am I going to do it all again to-morrow, then you'll be doing it tuff, think about the highlights of the day & keep positive, the right attitude is whats it's all about,as I get older I'm loosing that right attitude, I used to love big hills the bigger the better, Now I think to much about the danger, must be an old age thing Grin

Zeb if we ever do a big ride, we will have to invite Serge & brad along, we will need a couple of fuel tankers along Grin

Hmmmm a long ride , maybe we need to add a 2 banger duro to the calendar , then again that wont work cause all the tankers arnt 2 bangers ....  Maybe we need to call it 2 bangers + 2 duro ( two 4T's only ) nah forget it that would be non club orientated . Wonder how many 2T's their are in the club compared to 4T's .....  10 : 1    Huh

Back to the original question.

I'm with Ozinus, pre-hydration is crucial and correct food before and during a ride is very important.

Pasta and Veg the day before for storage of energy, and no less than 3 hours before the ride start drinking water and aim to drink 3 litres gradually before the ride.

Some Gatorade or similar 50/50 with water on the ride and then Gatorade for a while after the ride.

Another thing is to warm down after the ride with some walking and stretching, I thought this was rubbish until I started doing it, I was amazed how the 'day after' muscle soreness was reduced, especially in the legs.

G'day Zeb

You should be in the a4de..... it's on this week  !!!!

a bit over 200klm /day.

Having some good fitness/ hydration etc as allready mentioned is a given, but don't forget the mental side of things.

If you can ride with blokes or blokettes of a similar pace it is much easier & a 200klm day will fly by.

BUT.... I've found that if your pushing yourself all the time in a vain attempt to try & keep up with much faster riders, your brain gets fried, you make dumb mistakes, your confidence gets shot to ribbons, you end up riding ridiculously slow, & it can become really ,really hard.
