We have been out of the country for a decade and a lot has changed. Were have recently got a base in Lorne but we haven't ridden in the area yet. What is the best starting point for a "not too hard not too easy" ride in the area. We have L's and rec reg. on WR250F's.

Are there any areas in the Otways to avoid?

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
Lorne is Ok out the back, but to many people for my liking.
My personal preference is Wye River down the road where you can get fuel at the store. Not as many people and once your out the back quietly getting away from the houses it's all good. This ride area is the east side of the Otway SF and in the Angahook/Lorne SF. There is a track that runs parallel to the Wye River that has some tough bits in it.
Also I know of an awsome camping spot out the back over the ridge. If your interested send me a PM.
As this area is under watch by DSE for bikes it is important to keep to the trails and river crossings.

Thanks for that. I'll check out Wye as it's just up the road. There also looks like a lot of trails between Deans Marsh and Aireys Inlet. Is this also a bit crowded?

Hello, there are a few of us in Western Vic!

I don't know the tracks around Lorne that well but I've spent a bit of time on the tracks around Anglesea. Theres some pretty cruisy tracks around there for you to get back on your feet.

There are some serious tracks in the Otways, if you want to PM me I'll point you in the right direction.

Hi Oz,

Just to clarrify something. There is no state forest in the Otways anymore, it's mostly the Great Otway National Park and a few smaller Forest Parks. There is some good riding in the Bambra, Deans Marsh and Pennyroyal areas with the areas north of Bambra generally the less challenging. Anywhere you go at the moment is so dusty it is unbeleivable.

If you get to the north end riding areas like Paddy's Swamp and Tanners you will delight at the number of "proposed track closure" signs that DSE have put up in the past week Angry
