This was copied from another forum as I seem to have dropped off Kens email list.
Ian

Well another winter is almost upon us, we have already had some trail Bike Riders come to grief up here since Good Friday. Three young blokes decided to follow a GPS instead of a map and ended up stuck down at the Black River on an unnamed track, with no comms they decided to walk out in a blizzard and after a couple of days were able to get through on the mobile phone they had. When I found them they were almost popsicles but we got them back to the pub and our ambulance girls looked after them for the rest of the day.

The weather has been good since then and we have only had the occasional prang requiring our services. Most tracks are open to traffic, with the exception of Abbott’s Link and Abbott’s Creek, which are still closed. The DSE have not been able to do any work on Abbott’s link due to their workload but have improved the Comet Flat Camp site a fair bit.

Be advised that a new joint Trail Bike Patrol manned by Police and DSE Enforcement Officers will be working in the area from now on and traffic laws will be enforced, keep an eye out for Deer Hunters on your rides as they are now about in numbers.

Also it is with sadness that I announce that The Woods Point General Store and Fuel Station will be closing down in the next week, this of course means that you will not be able to purchase fuel at Woods Point after next week and it will be BYO.
It is not known if the store or fuel station will reopen as there are no new owners or prospects at this time, I will certainly let you know if the situation changes.

Just a reminder that you should carry all the equipment you will need to survive for a couple of days in the snow and rain over the winter period, water proof shelters and those Space Blanket things are useful, Sat Phone if you have one or an EPIRB.

The old Army hexamine stoves and mess kits are light and easy to use for cooking and lighting a fire as well a water proof matches, a must carry item.

A small UHF CB Radio is more useful than a mobile phone (channel 7 Duplex) for communications, a hand held manual chainsaw is small and doesn’t take up much room and could get you out of trouble. You must carry water to use if you are walking out as well as some emergency rations, remember if one of your mates is injured someone will have to walk or ride out for help, if you do, wait for police to come to you so that you can lead them or the ambulance in, don’t just arrive ring on the phone and disappear again, we need your help to find your mate.
Have a safe one.
