Hi all,
Got a story for ya.
1 Month ago i got a call from a customer that i do work for on his Rental property via a Real Estate Company. He just purchased a property in Doncaster and called me to look at putting a Safety Switch in the house, he also wanted me to check all the wiring to make sure it's safe. I rolled up and his Father was there to let me in and do my testing etc.
After spending 1 hour checking all the wiring etc, i gave him the bad news that some of the outlets had no earths to them.
He also wanted me to quote for some extra work that he wanted done "Heaps of things", 2 hours later after walking around n around with his old man "That i could barely understand" i finished writing in my diary and wrote an Invoice out for the Testing and Fault finding for 1 hour ($80.00) and handed it to his old man and headed back home.
All up i spent 4 hours travel, testing, fault finding and Quoting.
My wife asked me last night if the Invoice had been payed, so i emailed him and this is what i got:::

now i think about it, i remember asking you to come out to do a free
quote for me which i beleive you agreed to. i was surprised when you
asked me for $80 call out fee the day you were there, so not sure if
it was becuase you changed your mind or if it was to do with the work
that day. either way, i feel that you should waive this call out fee
considering that i've already given you lots of work in the past at my
watsonia house. i'm happy to continue to refer work to you for my
watsonia house, but charging me $80 for this call out will change this
in the future

please get back to me if you still want the $80

So i Emailed him back:::
Hi Albert,

You  wanted me to test the power to check that everything was ok so a Safety
Switch could be installed, then report any problems with the electrical
circuits , thats what i did when i arrived and that took me approx one hour,
this is not Quoting this is working and there is a charge for this $80.00.
You have said in your email that I worked. Well that is the charge for the
hour work I did. Then i did the Quote with your father. If I had driven over
and just done the quote, there would have been no charge.
All up driving from Epping, testing, then doing the Quote, i burn't about 4
hours of my time and probably $15-20 of  fuel.  If you look at it another
way, how about you come to my house and do nothing for 4 hours, i'm sure you
would love to do this exercise.  If you feel like your being ripped off
,don't worry about the bill, i would then like to decline on ANY other work
you need done if this is the case. Why do people want everything for free, i
did what you wanted, on the Day You Asked For, and lost 4 hours of pay .
Sorry Albert i run a Business and driving around helping people for FREE is
not good Business. As for your property in Watsonia, I have always charged
you a fair amount for the work done. I do not overcharge!
When you find an electrician that works for nothing, please pass their phone
number on to me.

Regards Peter

In my eyes i did the right thing.
Does anyone think he has been ripper off ??
Or is he just a scabby Asian GOOK ??
How much for a bottle of Brake fluid ??

His Last email::

hey peter

yes appears there was misunderstanding at both ends. let's agree to
disagree on this issue as i don't want to spend any more of our time
on this issue. i won't send the cheque or call on you in the future
for my watsonia property. i was happy with your work and pricing in
watsonia, so no hard feelings on this one
thanks
albert

Pete,

Sounds like he needs a good slap!

Maybe you should give hime the phone number of that guy who never answers his calls, or give him 20 cents to call the R.A.C.V., cos apparently, they care!

 Huh

You did the right thing Peter, I actually thought your response was very civilised.

I've had clients do the same, my standard response is "What you think we're a Not For Profit organisation or something? we have mouths (and bikes) to feed too you know."

Me mate is a sparky and gets the same rough deal all the time and as such hates domestic jobs now and just sub-contracts where he can, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.  Some people think the nice van with flashy tools just magically appear...

The guy must think he's pretty cute, I have one just like him who I hope never to work with again. He has not paid his current maintenance on his system that does an important job (outsourced) for the government and owes six weeks in back payments for another, all by his choice with constant reminders. Can't wait for it to fail then lets see how clever he is!

Perhaps we need to ask Mr Rudd to pay these bills as its it part of his grand plan?

So...In his last email he says to agree to disagree. But he still isn't going to pay you or give you any more work at his other property?
What an ar@ehole! If I lived near there I'd happily visit him in the middle of the night with some brake fluid myself.
The thing is he'll have to get someone else now and they'll probably charge more.
People like this really piss me off! I have a mate who built and installed a bathroom for somebody (foreigner too) and when he'd finished the guy said he wasn't happy with it and wouldn't pay him even though it was a perfectly good job.
My mate said "fair enough,I'll get my tools and leave"
He went into the bathroom, jammed the door, and proceeded to smash up all his work with a hammer....
