Hello all,
My DRZ400 has a standard exhaust that I think has been tampered with and is a bit noisy. It is going to Vicroads for an inspection so I can rec. reg it in my name, and I don't want to fail the @$%$%^$ noise test, any thoughts? One idea I found was stuff stainless steel wool into it for the day....

2 rec reg your bike you do not have to start it up so there should be no noise test, however get the original muffler repacked and it should help with the noise. Will

the drz 400 comes from the shop with a plate with small holes in the exhaust pipe 'cause their too damn loud. just about everyone chucks them when they get home. ring a bike shop to see if they have one you can borrow

My bet also is the baffle has been got at, very few if any four stroke bikes use an absorption medium for the muffler they rely on mechanical absorption/cancellation as in baffles and chambers, so there is nothing to repack  Below is a picture of a DRZ baffle and you can see the small holes around the end the baffle and I think there might also be one in the flat end. I'd guess your baffle has been cut off or the holes have been hogged out, pull your one out, I think its three 8MM headed bolts that hold it in, and see if it looks like this. The photo below that shows what it looks like with the baffle off, you could make something temporary if you wished out of a beer can and wire. I've taken four bikes to be Vic Roads for Rec Reg, from an 80cc mini bike to a XR400 and none of them had to be started or come off the trailer.   |

Lots of newer 4 strokes do seem to have packing, as do a lot of aftermarket mufflers, but assuming you have the standard muffler and your end looks like the one which Tim has posted up a coke can will not last long, but if you went to an exhaust shop and got a piece of pipe and a welsh plug from Repco you could make your own baffle for the end very easily .Will |

Where are you? I have a DRZ baffle you could borrow if urgent. PM if you need to. Ballards sell a DRZ end baffle, about $80. Looks like the one Tim shows but with more holes. Still reasonably quiet. Most Suzuki shops should also be able to supply an aftermarket baffle for the pipe for near the same cost. Depends where you go for rec reg, at Sunshine I have had to start the bike to show lights working. For the DRZ he told me to turn it off quick before he had to notice the noise. He was a bike rider.  . Mind you at Sunshine you turn up with a bike and they want to know where you got the money from to buy it.  Regards Mat. |

Hey guys, Thank you for the replies and the photo's. Well I pulled the baffle out and I found what is shown in the 2nd photo. A fine wire spark arrestor and a plate on the end of that, and thats all. No packing or anything else in the muffler. I guess thats not to bad but it is loud. Took it for a little spin today, just to warm the oil up officer I promise. I wont be taking that baffle out again, the srews and threads are rooted and was just a matter of forcing them back in. The bash plate screws will also need replacing, someone doesn't know how to screw right! If i don't have to start it it will be fine as it looks all original. Oh, the rear light is a LED UFO version, very small and basic but it has all the requirements, should be right shouldn't it?

It will be fine. Has the bike been registered before? If it has and you can give Vic Roads a rego number it makes their job a lot easier, they can use the existing details on their data base, and make sure you've got the receipt for the bike also. Have you made an appointment for the rego as there is a long wait for times at this time of year  If you have when is it? |

Back again, yep all booked in. Booked in on 20th Dec to get in on the 4th of Jan! Have all the required paperwork to go, still has a full reg plate on the back and the letter of renewal as well. Typed up a contract of sale which covers all of Vicroads requirements so it should be fine. Heading off to Portland in the morn. so no riding anyway, but I will get out soon enough.
