Hi,
Posted a last minute ride at Neerim South today and had a crew of 6 people. Our ride went well unfortunately another group of riders did not have the best of days.

This group had a rider down and we were asked to lend a hand, two of us assisted, having Level 2 first aid certificates, thanks to the club.
The guy will be OK the accident was attended by two Ambulances one from Neerim South and the other from Warrigal. The Air Ambulance attended and air lifted the patient to Melbourne.
The Ambulance services of Victoria are to be commended for their speed and efforts.

The track where the accident occured was very dusty...like bulldust and there were lots of smallish but steep and some larger errosion humps...one example was where the amulance got stuck. We were not too sure of the injuries, but the syntoms indicated some potential internal damage with severe pain. The MICA paramedic who attended from the chopper suspected a dislocated or fractured pelvis...the rider hit a tree pretty hard!

The separate group of riders he was with had very little idea of what to do. Hence we stayed around and Brad and I effectively took control, assessed the situation and suggested the call to get the ambulance, which according to the ambos was a very sound decision. The first aid training that AMTRA has provided both Brad and I gave us the extra confidence to take control of the situation...not that we could actually do much other than to give the injured rider confidence that he was being looked after. We were also able to organise his mates to get a vehicle to the site to get his bike and gear back to their camp.

Good work guys!!! It's nice to see the skills put in use.

Not to mention the additional confidence you will both have if god forbid you are ever in a similar situation.

Even just having two confient people on the scene would have calmed the victim and his mates.

I got a call from the injured rider (Joe) today. He rang to thank us for helping out at the scene. He very much appreciated our efforts and the time we put in to help get his rescue organised.

He was in hospital from Sunday to Thursday. He has severe bruising, a broken rib and a lacerated spleen(probably caused by the broken rib). Apparently the spllen injuy will heal OK with rest. He is otherwise OK and expects to be back at work within a month, but will probably be off the bike for 6 months (or more if his missus sells his XR400). Bike damage was limited to bent Renthals, clutch lever and perch and brake lever broken.

The doctors said that he was very wise to have been wearing his body armor as this certainly reduced the severity of his injuries. It also became clear that the ambulance rescue was the right thing to do as any excessive movement that may have resulted from us attempting to get him out in a 4 x 4 could have resulted in even more series injury to his spleen.

Joe was impressed with what we did for him and will think about joining AMTRA when he gets back into riding again.

To all, A great result from a truly great group of individuals come together in a common aim. Build on our strengths, and our problems will fade away by themselves.
