am looking for some info on the wireen school kidnappings that took place in early 77, the kidnapper was the same guy (edwin eastman) who also kidnapped a school teacher and pupils in (i think-1972 in farraday). he escaped gaol in late 76 and kidnapped a teacher and pupils in early 77 he then also took two truck drivers and a couple of tourists hostage on the grand ridge road, he was captured in the woodside area after a shoot out with police.   what i would like to know is if he held his hostages in the mullungdung forest,  urban myth has it that he did and that the hostages were kept in a cave there... anyhow i have been shown "the cave" and after doing a bit of research am unable to confirm weather or not this part of the story is true..   if anyone is interested the "cave" is in fact right next to one of the tracks that is part of fred and marls's woodside ride. . . . so any help in filling in the blanks would be appreciated.......................................

I remember both the Faraday and Wooreen school kidnappings as a kid. Ted Eastwood and Robert Boland kidnapped 6 students and their teacher from the small school at Faraday near Castlemaine in 1972. I remember my grandmother who was a school teacher telling me that she’d taught Robert Boland in Bendigo. The now disused school can still be seen on the side of the old Calder Hwy on the way to Bendigo.
Ted Eastwood escaped from Geelong Jail in Dec 1976 and while on the run he kidnapped 9 students and their teacher from Wooreen State School on the Leongatha Yarragon Rd in Feb 1977. He collected 16 hostages along the way and there was a subsequent shootout with police at a roadblock at Longford. Eastwood was wounded and arrested. He was released from jail in 1993. Don’t know anything about Eastwood using a cave at Mulungdung, but it’s not far from Woodside, so there may be some truth in it !
Maybe these old newspaper articles may help you John !

thanks wiggy,,  am thinking that perhaps the cave story is urban myth,, went for another look yesterday and think it would have been near impossible to fit 16 hostages in there.. someone has gone to alot of trouble to dig it out..
