What reccomendations do you guys have.
For trail riding purposes,would like bread crumbing feature & must have lat,long position feature.

Simon what was the one you have?

Steve,
I just got a cheap superseded Garmin Etrex Legend model. Here is what I found works for me as a result of the purchase. BTW I prefer a map because the batteries don't go flat and mostly use a the sun or compass with a map for orientation, however this does not always work.
One problem is if you head of down a tree covered single you can pop out wherever and it may take some time and distance to find a land mark or sign post. Other problems are missing sign posts and going into Pine plantations.
If you get a GPS get one with maps in it so you can see the nearest major road and direction, this helps allot as does the coordinates to reference to the paper map if you don't have a good built in one and satellite reception.
The other features you mention are good, I use them in the 4WD as they are easier to access. The new models also have more sensitive receivers and can work in dense scrub a limitation with older/cheaper models.
Still learning how to use the handheld, expect to find that I will use a common set of functions as I do with the one in the 4WD.

I've got the Magellan Explorist, they used to come in a heap of different models and seemed to go up by about $100 for each extra feature. Mines the 600 but I think anything from the 400 upwards had the Australian topo maps installed. I found it really good, it was amazing how many of the tracks the map had on it. Has breadcrumb feature and easy add of waypoints. It was also not too diificult to use the PC software supplied to setup a basic waypoint route that you could then try and follow.
