Hi All...
Quick question regarding riding with rec reg on your weekend rides.
Would Rec Reg be fine for most rides or do you require full rego?
Busting to get back into riding after some years off bikes and not sure if i should rec reg or full reg my KLX 250?
Once i get the rego sorted out i am joining and getting out the again!

Rec reg is fine for a lot of the rides - some rides go into towns for fuel etc. Then you could get a ticket.
But the only one getting the fine would be you so it's your call.

I have rec reg because my bike is non-ADR compliant. I don't really like taking it where I could get a ticket so if I do then I ride very sedately.
At $60 for the year I don't mind the bike sitting in the shed, and I already have a road bike and two cars running up full reg.
If you are going to ride often then I would go with full reg, as the easy option is often to go into town and fill the tank. Also gives the option to go on some of the overnight rides which stay at pubs in a town.
Having said that, there are enough rec reg bikes within AMTRA to start putting on rides that will specifically include them. And there are enough rides that rec reg is suitable for. I like the idea of having $450 a year to spend on my bike and gear rather than handing it to the government.
Once you get sorted PM me if you want to set up rec reg friendly rides.

I also only have rec reg,and when I finally get my crap sorted,would like to join AMTRA, and also get a second bike that has full reg,therfore giving me a high country bike(my current xr400),and a smaller bike for the quicker tighter rides.

I have rec reg also.
Its fine for most rides.
I havent been on a club ride in ages because of the rec reg issue.
If it were catered for and accepted as a suitable form of registration by the AMTRA committee then I am sure lots more people would join up to ride with the club.
AMTRA has rides that are acceptable for those with rec reg only.What is the issue that you are refering to with regards to catering for rec reg rides.Is it that most of the rides hit the tar at some stage,or is AMTRA's position to have a club that PREFERS riders with full reg.I am not a member of the club,and only ask the question to enhance my knowledge of the politics of the club. |

There is no AMTRA policy in place regarding rec reg to my knowledge. The ride leader makes the call knowing where the ride goes and if it is needed. The AMTRA commitee has no problems with rec reg remembering that it is not suitable for all rides.

Hmmm ok i think i am more confused now than before  I am thinking i will stick with rec reg for the time, get in touch with Mat R and set up some rec friendly rides. If i find im being confined with rec reg i will go full reg. The only reason i was thinking about it was that my local bike shop wouldnt RWC the stock KLX 250 without road friendly tires. Brion |

Then why cant rec reg be used by club members on the Sunday at this years HCR?
I rode a rec reg bike in the 05 and the 06 HCR and not one entrant complained about it.
So what's the current thinking to ban club members/volunteers from riding on Sunday in the HCR?
What is the difference between the Sunday ride and the Saturday ride in regards to rec reg.Is it ok to ride a rec reg bike around Buffalo Valley. |

As far as I know, the ride on Saturday goes through a town to allow for re-fuelling. This automatically rules out rec reg entry. Sunday's ride does not.
A Parks Vic or DSE permit is issued covering the event, requiring all bikes be fully registered. This may relate to noise limits as rec reg noise limits are higher than full reg.
Although the Sunday route may be all rec reg suitable the permit applicable to the event does not allow it.
I will still be taking my rec reg bike to the HCR, with full understanding that I may not have any opportunity to use it. But that is better than finding out I could go for a ride outside the HCR route and not having my bike there.
Time to bail now, see you after the HCR.

Hey guys...thanks for the comments.
I have gone with rec reg at present as i am just getting back into dirt bikes and think that will cover me at the moment.
Had my first blast today in Bunyip after many years off bikes and loved every moment of it.
Now looking for the first beginners ride or someone of similar riding skills to go riding with! (all my mates who used to ride have swapped bikes for babies)

I guess that not only rules out my super quiet mototrials machine but also any bike prior to ADR's (when did they come into effect on bikes, was it 1969 or later?  ?). |

Organise a protest ride down all of the closed tracks. I am sure you will get a godd attendance. What is the point of having a forrest that you can't use. The DSE and parks VIC really must have their heads stuck right their arses if they can't hear the chorus of leave the forrest and tracks alone you shiny bummed idiots. Maybe the ADR only bikes issue is a reference to noise ? It must be at exactly 92db where a male koala's eardrum bursts and it can no longer hear the female koala saying come and get it, leading to the extinction of the species! |

Paul, You have a thing about protest rides on closed tracks do you? I spouse we should just send you out to do a "Die Hard #3" wearing nil else but an "A" board saying shoot me!!!! I'm peeved at the way we get treated by the Government but I'm still prepared to try and work with what we have got. Let's all work together and if all else fails I'll dress up as BATMAN and ride a trials bike up the steps of Parliament House myself (does rec reg cover the steps of Spring St ) Motorials |

Seriously though on of the best ways of achieving your goals is by direct civil disobedience. It worked for Dr King - although he did get shot for his trouble.
If the police cannot do a thing when I send them photos of rec reg bikes without lights or chain guards then how could they do anything about this.

The underlying Imperative
I am very serious about this. The pollies, the DSE and parks Vic are intent on locking the lot up to please a bunch of ignorant city "greenies" who have never been to half the places we've been or seen what we have seen. The truth is they don't know what they are talking about because they have not even seen the track network beyong what their Kombies can take them.
What about the benefits of what we do ?
Every town in the high counrty (and those near national parks) benefits from us and it's about time that was recognised as well.
Is it the Ecology ?
50km of 20m wide fire break through the Big River woods point is good management but 100km of 20cm wide trail is an ecological disaster ? Please - these people need to grow a brain.
While I encourage riding legally and quietly - The day I start pulling swifties and using closed tracks gets closer every time the DSE & Parks shut another track. If we all did it they would not be able to police it as they don't have the numbers to enforce it.
I can guarantee that majority of riders that read this will agree the if we get locked out we will do it anyway and will be there to support an organised show of disobedience and disapproval of dumb populist policy.

Paul I thought there was a man of intelligence  behind those obvious flame posts (even if I agree with you). Somehow, underneath, I knew you were really a battle harderned campaigner looking for an outlet for your frustrations. When I get the time I'll read all your threads, I'm sure I get some good ideas As far as shooting people goes - Shoot me...nah take a number, with my love of bikes and living on the fringe of the Otways I'm looking for red dots on my forehead all the time  |
