hi there. i'm new to enduro riding and i'm looking to become a member of amtra, but of course i need a bike first. what do you think of a crm250? i'll be looking to spend about $4000.

i rode a crm on my first and only trip for a week long enduro in thailand, and i loved it. probably a little bit high for me as i'm a bit challenged that way, but i managed.

i'm pretty keen to get something i can ride on road for short distances too, as my car hasn't got a tow bar. how far do you have to ride from melbourne to find a track? any other bikes that can be road registered you could recommend?

You will need a trailer and a towbar. Pretty much no avoiding that. Most of our members have full reg that would allow us to ride our bikes on the road. But the reality is that the knobbies we use are great in the bush and crap on the road.

The CRM250 is a competent trail bike one bloke I know likes them so much he has three of them. But they are not what anyone would use in an enduro. It's sort of like a two stroke version of the TTR250 or DR250.

The KDX is getting a bit harder to get bits for as it has not been made for a while now and it is a tall purpose built enduro bike.

The shortest bloke in the club rides a DR250 and has no problems getting his feet on the ground. I am told that he manages to get the rest of his body onto (slam into) the ground as well occasionally, but you should avoid this where possible.

If budget is your key look closely at the XR250 as well. They have not really changed much since the early 90's except from red, to white, to pink (what the..) to red again.

cheers for that paul - guess i'll have to get a quote for fitting a tow bar, ouch. i have ridden knobblies on the road a bit and know the score there, but i just looked and saw where the club land is. buggered if i'm riding out there on a dirt bike Tongue.

i'll look at the xr, prices seem very budget friendly. they'd be pretty slow though right?

edit: looking around it seems the xr400r seat height is not that much different. that one might be a goer?

They are a great trail bike. Good for learners but not quite learner legal. A DR250 or XR250 will get you through that period and will sell easily at the other end.

Anyone know if/when Vic is going to the power to weight ratio learner legal system instead of the current 250cc limit ? Cool

The XR 250 is an awesome bike. It handles well. How about a Yamaha DT200? Good alrounder.

Does the XR400 qualify ?

If it does it would be really smart for this fella to buy one sit on it and wait until he can use it.

If we adopt the same rules you can ave any dirt bike you wont engine size will not matter, a berg 650 is on the ok list..

so a xr400 would be fine little heavy but fine

I borrowed some motard rims and bunged em on my 650 but took them off after 2 days. I found myself pulling huge sit down monos up the freeway and doing insane stoppies at the lights.

Body bags will be the only winner.

The idea behind this was to get things like the RGV250 out of reach of learners and put things like the GS500 within reach. Seems to have been perverted here...

cheers for all the replies, there are some great deals on xr400s around so i'm going to see if i can test ride one to see if it's not too tall.

i'm sure the license discussion is helpful for others reading, but myself, i've had my bike license for 15 years  Shocked, just spent it all on road. now about that tow bar...
