It will also depend on the oil system on the bike. Some bikes run separate gear and engine oil while others it is all together.  Two smokes run crank oil in the fuel and separate gear/clutch oil.

Thumpers like the DRZ carry about 2.5 lt of oil, while WRF/CRF only 1.5 lt.  Bergs carry less.  So a DRZ every 1000 and WRF/CRF every 500 would be due to oil quantity difference as well as rev range when running.

Oil is cheap (even cheaper at the meetings) so a 500 km rule of thumb or 10-15 hrs ride time would work well.

The darker the oil, the more in need of a change.

I have an hour meter on my bike so base it on that.  Usually between 5-10 hrs on a WR (More often at 10hrs than 5).  I do most of my servicing (except airfilter) based on hours of use.

'06 CRF450x .... basically every 500km with filter since new ... I was going to change the filter every 1000 and thought the six bucks aint worth having a dirty filter with clean oil !!!!

Also as the gearbox oil is seperate, I normally change it at least every 1000km .... Again, it depends on the type of riding I've been doing as I also ride my bike to work every week day !!
