On my 2 stroke I do it every 1000 and it still looks new.

The fishy social secretary is a funny man. If your very lucky, one day you may even catch him on a bike to give advice on oil changes. However, you have more luck winning tattslotto than ever seeing fish ride !

Todays oils are very good so dont worry if you let it go over 500km every now and then. I have a oil change window of 500 to 1000 km. If i go on a 800km desert ride i change the oil even if its only done say 300km. But i wont bother changing it on the ride. In short i try to change it at about 500km, but wont lose sleep over it if it goes over by a couple of hundred every now and then. Depends on riding conditions too- did you abuse the clutch on  a hill in 40 degree heat  and thrashed the bike all day? I would probably change it after such a ride. What bike? I would change it on a CRF more than on a XR400 for example. Just make sure u use good oil.

I'm of the same attitude of Dirtpilot in that I aim to change every 500 or so kms.

I dont think I've ever let it go to 1000 kms but I'd say I've gone 800 or so quite a few times and never lost any sleep over it...and I've never had a mechanical issue ever.

I change oil filters every third oil change.

I do ride a 525 though...if it was a smaller bore I might be a little more strict, but then again maybe not ;)

Greg i have always wondered why people dont change their filters at the same time.. they arnt that expensive so for the small price and the piece of mind i just do them at the same time... I dont put dirty underwear on after a shower...

Depends on what sort of riding you do...
If you just do general trail riding 500kms or so is the rule of thumb, but if you do clutch cooking hill climbs & deep river crossings, keeping ur engine singing @ full noise etc. then change the oil after each ride. Water in ur oil is a big no, no! It can get in thru your breather tube. An oil change is cheap insurance considering the price of an engine rebuild compared to a ($15)litre or so of oil. Trail riding is pretty hard on gearbox oil...

Hi Sam

If your riding a bike like a CRF,WR,high reving bike, use the best oil you can aford full (synthetic) & change it every 500km.

If your riding a bike like XR,DR,TTR,XT,even a DRZ low reving bike, using a full synthetic oil you can normaly get far MORE than 500km between oil changes, more like (1000km)-2000km between changes,& change oil filter every second change.

If your using a mineral oil, make shore its a good brand oil & change it every 500km & change oil filter every second

The difference between (synthetic oil)&(mineral oil) other than the known, is basicly synthetic is made up of longer strand polymers & mineral oil has short strand polymers & dont last as long as the strands break down much quicker,so as long as you do regular changes with mineral oils there is no drama!!

CHEERS MATT!

It will also depend on the oil system on the bike. Some bikes run separate gear and engine oil while others it is all together.  Two smokes run crank oil in the fuel and separate gear/clutch oil.

Thumpers like the DRZ carry about 2.5 lt of oil, while WRF/CRF only 1.5 lt.  Bergs carry less.  So a DRZ every 1000 and WRF/CRF every 500 would be due to oil quantity difference as well as rev range when running.

Oil is cheap (even cheaper at the meetings) so a 500 km rule of thumb or 10-15 hrs ride time would work well.

The darker the oil, the more in need of a change.

I have an hour meter on my bike so base it on that.  Usually between 5-10 hrs on a WR (More often at 10hrs than 5).  I do most of my servicing (except airfilter) based on hours of use.

'06 CRF450x .... basically every 500km with filter since new ... I was going to change the filter every 1000 and thought the six bucks aint worth having a dirty filter with clean oil !!!!

Also as the gearbox oil is seperate, I normally change it at least every 1000km .... Again, it depends on the type of riding I've been doing as I also ride my bike to work every week day !!
