afternoon all

so i've done some research and i think the dr-z 250 will be a good bike to start out on, and they suit my budget.

i'm looking at a couple of 2004 models this week - one hasn't done a lot of k's so it might have sat around a bit. apart from the general stuff, any advice on what to check closely?

cheers!

Theres lots of little things to look for..

The foot pegs are the loose of are the springs tight?
Loose pegs might meen its done more kms than you think

How sharp ar the pegs? have they been filed to make them sharp again?
Sharp pegs mean low kms but resharpend pegs can mean high kms.

Look for buckles in the rims, then roll the bike forward and look again, people allways put the buckle so you cannot see it.

Handle bar grips, how worn are they?
I wear out a set of grips every 4,000km ish!??!

Grab the rear gaurd and lift the suspension up
that will check for movement in the rear suspension bushes.

Disc rotor thickness, disc rotors arnt cheap!!!!
hace a look you only get about 2mm wear then there no good for a RWC.

Does it come with RWC
if it dosn't it can be a pain in the ass, you have to put lights ect on the bike
Does it come with all the lights?

The list goes on ill add to it later tonight but smoko's over for now....

Best advise of all, If you dont know get it looked at
a measly $77?? most shops will give it a going over for you
and they will know the commen faults with the bike..
and they will probly call that the cost of the RWC and you wont have to pay for that in the end, well worth the money

so i bought one on the weekend Smiley it's going for a road worthy this week and i should have it in the garage by the weekend.

it's a 2002 model but it's got low k's and one owner who seems to have taken good care of it. it also already has a bash plate, bark busters and heavy duty tubes.

now i'm shopping for gear, i should be good for a ride soon! cheers for your advice.

Also have a look at Ballards, www.ballard.cc, as they have some specials on gear.  Order by phone and usually get next day delivery to your door.

But the bike store collection in Ringwood is good to compare prices, assuming you are somewhere near there.

Have had good service from Peter Stevens in the city and can get a discount if you ask.

You are likely to save money if you buy run out stock of last years stuff, as the graphics no longer match the current MX riders etc that you don't really care about copying.

Helmet I would go to the store for, as some brands will fit you and others won't.  Also worth spending the money on a good one.

Goggles - this time of year fogging up is a problem so a good anti fog pair is worth the money.

Boots - same thing as the helmets with the fit, but if you know size and brand there are some on-line bargains.

Gloves - MX type are no good once wet.  Look for more trail oriented gloves.
