Mat has brought up some good points, but (at least for the YZ) they can all be addressed if you choose to do so.
I have an enduro-ised 2T YZ250 (2008) - for me, the bike is great fun to ride in the bush.
To address the shorter ratio gearbox, I fitted a complete set of WR400/426 gears (slight case mods required) and dropped the final drive ratio down to 13/52.
IMS, Clarke and Acerbis all make long range tanks, and you can fit a fuel tap with a reserve to give some warning if you are running low on fuel. I have a 13ltr IMS tank.
The power delivery is smoothed out by adding a heavier flywheel - in my case a 9oz GYTR flywheel. Some people prefer heavier ones, but I still like to be able to feel the snap that the engine produces - although it does make it a bit of a handful in the wet clay at times.
The standard exhaust pipe does a pretty good job of allowing the bike to 'tractor' when needed - I fitted an aftermarket silencer to drop the noise level down.
The rear suspension was able to be adjusted to cope well in standard form, but I modified the shim stacks in the front suspension to soften the low speed initial hit, as it was harsh in standard form.
I initially bough an aftermarket 'lighting' stator for running the lights, but this failed on the first trip out (luckily just a few kms from home), so I replaced it with an LED kit setup from Small Coil Rewinds - not the brightest of lights, but legal for rec rego.
A set of barkbusters, bash plate, pipe guard, and it was good to go!
It is still a motorcross bike, but just a 'softened' version.
Final cost worked out cheaper than getting a euro 2T, but not by much. I also miss out on the electric start, but that hasn't really been an issue so far.
I enjoy customising things, so the conversion work on the YZ was a fun project.
