HI All, I have just joined the forum and I am looking to get kitted up to go out for some rides. I want a 4 stroke road registered bike and am looking at buying a new DRZ-400, GPS, helmet etc. I have had a fair bit of road experience and have heard the DRZ-400 while not being the most exciting bike on the market is very reliable and low on maintenance. I am moving to Cockatoo and will be doing some riding on my own from there. I am interested in hearing any comments on what bike I should buy and where I should go to buy it. Currently I am looking at Peter Stevens motorcycles. I would also like to meet anyone who lives up in the hills and would be interested in riding with a newbie. Cheers Alex

Alex,
Everything you've said about the DR is exactly right. A very capable ride, although a bit 'out-dated' now. Still, there are heaps of hot-up bits available for them to make them more 'interesting'. I did an 8 day tour to Cape York on one and found it fun to ride.
I'd recommend Mick Hone in Mont Albert for all things Suzuki.
A WR could certainly be worth a look, although steer seems to be many different opinions about the new 450.

I have had a DRZ400 e for a few years now and yes it will do everything and is bullet proof but the modern bikes are so much better even after you have done all the mods to make a DRZ better. I have now gone with a Husky TE449 for what I do (enduro trail rides) it is perfect and has better suspension, brakes, lighter and just so much better than the DRZ. Ps I still have my DRZ with over 20,000 Km on it for a commute and adventure bike. I would suggest look at any 450 with fuel injection and 6 speed g/box, most bikes have there good and bad points

Thanks Serg C and Glennboy, If I go with the DR I will check out Mick Hone if I go with the Suzuki. But I have am tempted by the Husky they are both in about the same price bracket but the Husky is fuel injected a definite bonus I will keep doing my research. Opinion is good but when it is back up by experience it is even better.

Good solid bike the DR-Z, was the bike I got to get into trail riding. Did everything I wanted to do until I wanted to go a bit harder where the DR-Z starts to show it's limits.
If you would like to trail ride all day and not are not interested in riding at a full on pace the DR-Z is a great choice. It can be ridden steady all day but if you push it then will tire you out quickly.
Price wise they are good value and can be sold on for a reasonable price. If you are not set on new there are good examples with low k's for less than the new price.
Don't write off the 250F's either as they are an easier bike to ride in a lot of situations, just the open trails where they start to lag behind the bigger bore machines. That is where the current crop of 350F's fit in but they are all at the higher end of the price scale, way more than a new DR-Z will cost you.
Over summer the trails near Cockatoo can be reached by road and then ridden, but once it gets wet I would recommend trailer to the trails and full knobbies as anyone who has ridden around there will vouch for the slippery red clay. You will need all the grip you can get.

Thanks for the invite Seano but the 11th is a bit early for me. Don’t want to hold you guys up too much I will go solo for a while around Cockatoo get used to the bike and riding in the bush. Once I get a bit of practice in will definitely go out for a run maybe later in January. I’m sure I will learn a lot trying to keep up with you guys look forward to it.

dont go out solo way to dangerous get out on the level 1 rides thats why they are put on for the rider with bugger all experience and you will be blown away with the support which you will receive. Dont be concerned about holding up the other guys they are well aware of the ride level they are going on.Get your sh!t together and get out on a ride. Regards Will

G-Day Apcave Don't delay on getting out on an AMTRA ride. Fumina would be perfect for you to run the bike and yourself in gently. Our rides are run with a ride leader and a tail man, the ability and speed of the riders in-between is always variable and it is not necessary to keep up with any body, it is not a race and the tail man is there to help as required. DO NOT go trail riding on your own, anything can happen and when it does a well organised club is what you need to be in. See you there

G,day Alex, Welcome to AMTRA, congratulations on your new ride. Mate, please reconsider going riding solo,, it's really just not worth the risk of something unexpected happening. Put your name down on Al's Fumina ride, as has already been said this ride is an ideal way to meet some of us and it is also a great way to see first hand how the AMTRA family works. Don't put pressure on yourself by thinking you have to "keep up" or you'll be "holding us up", because that simply won't be the case. Ride at your own pace, help is always on hand if you need it, Anyways,,,,, welcome aboard, enjoy your new bike and there are heaps of people here who will lend a hand, whether that's in the form of advice or something more practical, oh and there's always someone to give you a stir up should you have a whoopsie, .................catch you out and about soon

Watch this Alex. If you ride alone and this happens, you could still be in the bush. Cheers Chippy.

Alright you guys have convinced me not to ride alone. I will do my best to make the 11th but I am moving house so I may need to go to the next level one ride. Would one of you guys be able to point me in the direction that explains the levels? At least I will be safe riding with others. Look forward to meeting the crew soon.
