i'm looking at buying a new bike, ill have about $3000 to spend and want some opinions on a entry level bike

Or Suzuki DR(Z) 250 for the same reasons Ron has mentioned above.

I'm looking to sell a Gas Gas ec250
new piston & rings, chain. These things are bulletproof & offer a lot more fun factor than a ttr or drz. $2500 with rec rego. pm if interested..... I'm out past Pakenham & there is plenty of room to test ride on private property.

As a complete newbie to dirt bike riding I've found my DRZ250 to be a very forgiving bike.  It has never let me down - unfortunatly I can't say that I have been as kind to my bike, at least my gravity assisted dismounts are becoming fewer these days.
