Post by: kurnol on December 27, 2011, 04,49:32 AM
Gday all, while changing oil and giving bike once over noticed a crack in the rear rim of my crf450x. I'm hoping someone can suggest where I can get a new rim/wheel at short notice as i was riding/camping starting thurs. Tried ringing round today but no luck, all closed.

Cheers.

You could try Lightfoot Engineering in Mont Albert.  I suspect he will be on holidays, but you could give it a go.

Good luck!

While a cracked rim is a concern it's not the end of the world.I had a severly cracked rim on my XR 400 for about five years before I replaced it.And I only did it then because I thought It's about time.  Keep an eye on it but don't stop riding.

Post a photo up of it, we'll tell you if we think it will stop you riding in the short term.

My front rim has cracks (3-5mm) starting between the spokes and heading towards the next spoke, from running very low pressures. One day they will meet up but I'll make sure the rim is replaced before then. I've been keeping an eye on it for the past 6 months and I've done a desert ride weekend, Al's 2 day and the First Class weekend at Abbeyard with the cracks in the rim.

A trick I and many others have used successfully is to drill a very small hole at the end of the crack. In most cases it stops the crack from getting longer.

This can be used for cracks in plastic, steel and aluminium. Not recommended for bones.
