Title: Cape York Post by: Keith Coota on January 10, 2008, 08,32:58 AM Has Anyone been on a Cains to Cape York Ride. It looks like a once in a life time must do. Something I would like to do some day for sure.
Maybe the Club could organize an event Title: When? Post by: Mat R on January 14, 2008, 10,30:55 AM Hey Keith,
I think the Cairns to tip ride would be fantastic and would really like to do it. This year is kinda out, but next year could be a go. Some time around mid year would be good. Would prefer to do the ride to the tip, rather than the return. Seeya, Mat. Title: Cape York Post by: Angus B on January 15, 2008, 06,23:54 AM I can vouch that Cape York is a great adventure.
I went up years ago on an XT600 that I rode all the way from Melbourne on road tyres (ie. not knobblies). Due to riding solo, luggage, and lack of knobblies I stuck to the main routes (Old telegraph track etc). But my time up there did allow me to see the potential of what the area has to offer. Once reaching the tip I tried to have my own mini Dakar on the way back - from tip to Cooktown in a day. The lack of knobblies thing let me down about lunchtime and 700km into the challenge with a big off, I spent the afternoon extracting bull-dust from my carby and every orifice of my body. To go on dirt bikes with a 4wd back-up would be ideal (or org'd tour), I'm sure some of the club members have done similar before and can comment. We had a great time with everything other than beers at night provided. It included a night at a back packers at Cape Trib and all meals. We did the CREB and several other tracks, including a return down the Bloomfield track. Riding through the Daintree river with the possibility of crocs was interesting. It is a good and not very hard introduction to riding in the area if you don't have the time for the full trip to the top.
I know others in the club have organised and done the full trip up and back from Wiepa. Dennis Dorman |
