Title: Native Title Claim Post by: Ian Robinson on June 10, 2010, 09,16:34 AM AMTRA received a copy of this some months ago however I was away for the meeting and did not hear the outcome of what we wanted to do about it, if anything.
This was sent to us from the Victorian Lands Alliance today. Hi All, Attached is a recent claim for Native Title lodged by the Gunai/Kurnai people for about 20% of Victoria that includes most East Gippsland and high country forested areas through to the coast. ’the applicants seek a determination that the native title rights and interests confer possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of the land and waters to the exclusion of all others....’ The attached outlines the process for becoming a party to the process of the claim application. If a person or organisation becomes a party to the claim they can have a say in the application, if they do not become a party before June 23rd 2010 they effectively have no say in the determination of the title claim. The title claim applies only to public land. The title claim, if successful, would have a major effect on all members of VLA plus many others I would think. I suggest that I prepare an application for VLA to become a party to the claim and that we discuss whether we proceed with this at our meeting on June 23rd, which is the day applications to become a party close. If VLA decide to become a party we can lodge the application in person on that day.
