I noticed on a recent ride: people passing on the left and right of slower bikes and people riding continually on the right hand side of fire trails forcing faster bikes to only be able to pass on the left.

I like to ride to the left incase another vehicle/bike comes the other way and to allow bikes to pass only on my right just like the road.

 Is there a Passing Etiquette???

Dont know if there is an etiquette? But im the same as you in that i try and stay left as much as possible. And find it works well for me, especialy with blokes who ride with me a lot who get to know my ways and always pass me on the right and wait till the right becomes avalible to make their pass. As a ride leader who manages to drift back through the pack between regroups. When im passing a slower rider, i try and pass on the right and roll out of the throttle as you do. Can be difficult though with people who love the left, right and middle of the track though. Also when i pass Nath, i will use what ever side is avalible and dont roll out of the throttle. However this hasnt happened yet!

The big problem is a lot of ppl seem to think the right side of a track is the best line to use, I have come up to those riders & let them know that I'm there, you get to know that those riders are happy to stay there, so I then wiz past them on the left, I think it's good to remind riders to keep left as much as possible at the riders briefing.

Have ya noticed that a lot of ppl drive in the right lane, they must think the right lane flows better because it's a passing lane, I usually get a much better run in the left lane because every body wants to be in the right one Grin

Falling off doesn't hurt, it's the sudden stop that does the damage.

Not always the case!!
I remember at last years Holbrook ride, one Nathan S passing me " Mind you i wasn't exactly going slow" and in a flash i saw him departing the track on the RHS, and from there on i think he may of slowed down a tad. Grin Grin

Interesting conversation gents. Left is always best is what I was told. That said, in the interests of both the passer and the passee it is sometimes necessary to throw this all out the window. Slow or fast downhills or uphills sometimes lead to situations where its better to do what is safest for all. On open trail stay left and let the heavy handed have their way.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Beer in one hand - throttle in the other - body thoroughly used up,totally worn out and screeming what a ride
