Lifted straight from the SBS website

From January 2 to January 17, SBS will broadcast daily highlights on of the Dakar Rally on SBS ONE, following the cars, trucks, motorbikes and quads as they race through 5,000 kilometres of merciless terrain.

A record number of Australians will compete in the 2011 Dakar Rally and for the first time, an all-Australian team, GHR Honda, will tackle the rugged terrain.

2009 Australasian Safari Rally winner, 22 year old Jacob Smith, will spearhead the Aussie contingent on the motorbikes, alongside team mates Mark Davidson, Simon Harslett and Warren Strange.

Bruce Garland and Geoffrey Olholm are two of the Aussies competing in the auto rally.

Beginning in Buenos Aires, the 2011 Dakar Rally will be the third to be held in South America, following a route to the north of Argentina and Chile before returning to Buenos Aires.

Both amateur and professional drivers take on the ultimate test of stamin and strength as they navigate the particularly tough terrain, which includes dunes, mud, camel grass rocks and ergs.

The mix of physical toughness, technical performance and spectacular backdrop makes the Dakar Rally one of the highlights of the motor sport calendar.

SBS will also provide comprehensive coverage online at www.sbs.com.au/dakar - the official site for the Dakar Rally in this territory.

It will feature up to the minute news reports, video highlights of every stage, full results from all stages and categories, a full list of competitors in all categories, official stage profiles and maps, photo galleries plus an exclusive blog from SBS’s man on the ground, Jacob Black in Argentina and Chile.

SBS’s coverage of the 2011 Dakar Rally begins on 2 January 2011 on SBS ONE.

I missed the two in the car, Bruce Garland and Geoffrey Olholm, so that's eight Aussies!

Well out of ten Aussies starting, I missed two more also in a car but a Pommie team, we are down to two, Jacob Smith with GRH Honda on a CRF450X in 34th position and Simon Pavey on a BMW in 71st position. Simon is the guy from the TV show "Race to Dakar" with Charley Boorman a few years ago.

It's not even the half way point yet! :P
