evening. so i've got the dr-z 250 in the garage now! spent today taking bits off and putting them back on to familiarise myself with it. the service manual should turn up tomorrow so i might even know what i'm doing soon...

anyway, gear! i already have helmet goggles, elbow guards, and a kidney belt. this will be for trail riding and a little commuting. this is my shopping list so far:

- o'neal underdog armour $200 (brightonbikesandbits.com.au) (yes i won't need my elbow / kidney protectors anymore but these all in one jobbies look the business)

- alpinestars tech 6 $500 (motorcyclemart.com.au)
(basically because they felt comfortable in the store and suit my budget)

- dri-rider rally cross jacket $200 (bikebiz.com.au) (this looks like a good waterproof jacket, and i'll use it with the armour in for riding to work, and take it out when i wear it over my o'neal armour)

- fox fluid jacket $55 (motomart.com.au) (simple rain proof over jacket to carry)

and i need to try on pants. any suggestions re: over or inside my boots? any other thoughts?

cheers for the advice so far, this site has been a great resource. and i'll make a trip out to check those shops that were recommended in the other thread later in the week. if possible i'd rather buy from a shop and get some advice than save a few bucks by ordering over the net.

Your gear list sounds pretty complete.

I like bikebiz.com.au, that's where I get a lot of my riding gear from.

I'd suggest getting the Rallycross Evo as opposed to the standard Rallycross jacket...I read a lot of reviews that seemed to mention that the Rallycross are proned to wear and tear however the majority of these issues were sorted in the Rallycross Evo. (I bought the Evo 2 weeks ago and it's been great)

As for the Fox fluid jacket, the Evo comes with a pretty solid internal waterproof liner...It is almost unnecessary to buy the Fluid jacket as well.

The tech 6 boots are fantastic. I've had a pair of tech 6's for 2 years and they never seem to wear out at all! They are an extremely well made boot.

Good luck and hope this helps somewhat.

Adam.

cheers adam, i'm pretty much a newbie so even hearing that i'm on the right track helps. i checked and the price and picture i have up there is for the rallycross evo, so i might go ahead and order that. i think i might as well get the upgrade kit for $70 too: "Features a 1.5 litre hydro-pack bladder, zip in long sleeved quilted thermal lining and CE approved dual-density elbow & shoulder armour."

and you're right about the fox fluid jacket - i don't need that. i forgot gloves though, i have motorcross ones but they won't cut it in the cold. is there an 'enduro' style glove or do most guys just wear a winter road glove?

Gloves...

Road gloves are often used in the ultra cold bits as are skiing gloves. Skiing gloves are very cheap when purchased in Nov ! Thick gloves give very little feedback and grip though.

I have been using Ironclad Ranchworx gloves as well from Bunnings. Very good. I'd stick with your MX gloves and get a pair of these for spare. I always carry at least one spare set.

No you can't borrow mine !

I use a pair of thor neoprenegloves for winter. They don't exactly keep your hands completely dry,but they are warm.
