Title: Rider Rating System
Post by: Brett 570 on August 04, 2011, 10,05:32 AM
Hi Guys im thinking of joining, but ive got a question, how does your rating system work and who rates the riders ability?.

I understand that most people over rate their ability, so do guys who ride the hardest stuff let anyone ride with them or do you have to ride at a lower level first?.

So i guess my question is, am i able to ride with the top level guys without having ridden with them before?.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Regards,

Brett

We don't crash here at AMTRA, we like to call it "Picking up a Dollar Coin that someone who left it on the ground".
Our club has Rider Gradings for a reason, so if you can ride and don't fall off often start with a Level 2 ride, just to see how you go.
But if your looking for some loonies to ride with, come out with Me and my spastic followers.
Yes i have a 570 as well and like to ride looking up at the Sun. So if you would like to Attend a ride with fellas who like to ride Quick then come out on Saturday at Mt Dissapointment.
You will very quickly find out what level you are on a club ride and then attend the appropriate ride for your style of riding.

Bret. In the about AMTRA section (top of the disscussion section) there is the clubs rating system. It is more based on what you can handle on a ride with regard to terrain, bike repairs, etc. I run rides in the harder end of the club and do prefere riders that have been on a lower level ride and can tell me how they went. As i ride leader and as you pointed out, people do tend to over rate their abilties. And i have riden with many guns at the start of the day, to then find them an easy way home by lunch? The other thing with the club is taking your helemt off to help a fellow rider is going to happen at any level, as this is what makes it a club and keeps the ride flowing. The time your helmet is off does get less the further up the levels you rise though. Hope thats helpful, Al

Most of the replies are not very helpful for a potential new member guys. Perhaps our new club captain should post a  reply.

Brett,
Firstly great question.

Going on a Clubman ride may not the best idea for your first ride with AMTRA as its not just about the level there are other considerations, such as bike setup , terrain, fuel, tools and fitness etc..

Most people work out their ride level by using the guide Al pointed to, attending a few rides around a level and then determining how it fits. Discussion with other riders and the ride leader on rides will also assist in working this out.

People do not always go on rides they are capable of (its not a test). Some may go out to enjoy themselves and ride on a variety of rides and levels based on what rides are on, when their mates are available, where they are on and how they feel on the day.

It takes new members awhile to get the lay of the land WRT how rides are run, how the club operates, who's who, different ride locations/terrain and how each ride leader runs a ride.

I suppose its a mix with your personal views and capabilities in the pot, there is no magic hard and fast answer here, experience will be the best guide.

Hope to see you on a ride!

Brad

Hi Brett,

Ignore the smart alec replies, we normally do.

Ride rating is done by the ride leaders, with what they plan to do on the ride. It is recommended to go on a Level 2 ride to see how the club operates rides, then chat to the ride leader after to see if they agree with your own thinking of what you could do.

This is not a strict rule, if you would prefer to go on a clubman level ride first up then ring the ride leader and have a chat.

We invite prospective members on a few rides first to see if AMTRA is a club for them, so you can try a couple of different rides to see if they are what you are looking for.

If you want a more general chat about AMTRA then call me on 0409 520 642.

Regards

Mat

If you think you can handle harder rides, i would say go for a clubman ride and see how you go. Best thing if you are unsure give the ride leader a call to discuss.

Hi mate,
Dont stress on your ability or the level of a ride. The issue is that there is no easy measure. So if I put on a ride & its Level 2+ those riders who want to go have a general idea its not a beginers ride. ( past ride reports usually outline ride types)

If a ride is level 1 stepping up to 2, then its for those wanting to improve from their own starting ability.

Clubman is sort of strange as the variables are, ability, fitness, confidence, bike prep, ability over different terain and then speed. But at the end of the day its not a race. So if your happy & confident then hook up on a ride that you want to go on, the ride leader will not be a "tool bag" they will help sort out issues & assist.

From experience , no one will wear an expert tag as those guys always know someone better, faster etc.

Anyway start riding & sort out those people who you like to ride with & those who suit your ability. Or ride with those who challenge your ability if you like.

Cheers Pete
