Title: Beginner + DR650 + enthusiasm
Post by: nobby on November 08, 2011, 07,41:18 AM
Hi all,

I have a DR650 and I'm just starting out trail riding. How do you think I'd cope with the rides you guys put on? I know the bike is not as nimble as most, but I use it on road too... Are there any beginner rides coming up? I have M21 tyres.

I've been going out solo and can't get enough of it, but better/safer to go in a group, plus hopefully can learn some more.

I'm really keen if the rides are suitable!

Cheers
Nobby

There would be a few rides suitable, though most rides test out any dual purpose tyres when it gets wet.

I am not familiar with M21 tyres but being good on road usually means not so good off road. With summer coming up it would not be too much of a problem.

You are welcome to come along to a level 1 ride before joining to see if you like the style of rides we do, contact the ride leader before going and have a chat about where they expect to go.

BTW, we tend to trailer out the bikes to the ride area rather than ride them, as most bikes are best suited for dirt rather than tar. Check out some of the rides in the video link section.

OK, great. Thanks for the replies folks.

I can't see a beginner ride on the calender yet but will be sure to keep my eyes out here and get in on the next one.

Look forward to it.

hey nobby. i started out at amtra with my dr650. duel tires are no good mate. what i did is got a set of motard rims and road tires. then set up the stock rims with good trail tires. level beginner-1 is fine for you but when you get to level 2 and up, the bike starts to feel very heavy.

i did a heap of mods to suit my hight. you will want to get rid of the cement mixer rear end aswell.also fit flush mount indicators...if you need any tips just pm me. the lads will give you heaps of great advice aswell.

best advice..when going down a hill thats muddy and slippery, it is very hard to pull the dr up with all her weight. a loud horn can work  ;D.

if you chase up a few topics and threds that i did on the dr650 you will see some photos of what i did. hope this helps

here you go , scroll down this thred and it explains itself.. \
