Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 09, 2011, 08,09:12 AM thanks Al, is the spark plug for botched river crossings or just a general spare due to the distance covered?
also, I've got a 2006 WR250F, any idea how many extra litres I need to carry to get me to 130K? I'm 73kgs. Speaking some someone on the weekend they mentioned 3 litres - does this sound about right? also, one more q: how do you fellas carry the fuel? I've got a camelbak blowfish which would have enough storage, but what do you put the fuel in? some kind of bladder? Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: AL on August 09, 2011, 10,51:12 AM Buckerooni. Spark plug is for a river crossing gone wrong, which hopefully dont happen. As this is only a level 2 day i will keep them to a minimum. And if your unsure at any of them just ask or walk them. Its also a good idea just to carry a plug anyway, just incase. As for fuel I will carry 2 litres and i ride a 07 WR250F and am a little heavier than you. I probly wont need two litres on the day, but its always good not to have to push your bike home? Most fuel is lost when bikes are laying down having a rest, other wise you should make it easy. Most blokes use 1 litre fuel bottles you can get from the bike shop. I use two plastic bottles and empty them into the tank as soon as i can get them to fit. The main thing riding around Fumina is tyre preasures as this place has teflon covered clay that nothing stick to. Hope that helps Al
Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 09, 2011, 12,11:02 PM Thanks Al, all that sounds good. It was about time for a new spark plug so I'll buy two! Will turn up with about 11psi and the floor pump in the car just in case.

Will turn up with about 11psi and the floor pump in the car just in case. you will wanna drop the rear to about 8psi with ultra heavy duty tubes if you want to go up the hills and not slide helplessly backwards down them.Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 09, 2011, 12,53:50 PM thanks james, noted!

Al Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: Tim Dykes on August 12, 2011, 09,43:42 AM There could be a lot of water in those rivers this weekend, thake care ::) Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: AL on August 12, 2011, 10,59:33 AM Tim
Only got the one with rock ledge getting out, that has to be crossed. The water was half way up the doors the other day crossing at the bottom of the staircase. And i took notes at the meeting when this gun came and gave us a talk about how to cross rivers. And how he had seen some idiot ride leader fall in only the week before. So glad it wasn't me? l Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 13, 2011, 11,06:55 PM thanks to everyone who helped me de-water the bike yesterday you guys were champs - much appreciated.
introducing my river-inspired zombie oil: (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j4UhPPmTq-E/Tkb-rH5YWQI/AAAAAAAAAw0/IqaymNqOOB8/s800/IMG00070-20110813-1654.jpg) hello and goodbye 8 litres of coles 'smart buy' motor oil! Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: Peter r on August 13, 2011, 11,19:48 PM Looks like a good time to get another bike !!!
Oil n Water not the best of combinations. Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: AL on August 14, 2011, 02,07:07 AM Buckerooni, the help was not a problem! Sorry your day ended so early, at least it was easy to get you back to the cars. If you need any more advice with oil and water issue let me know. We had some more de-watering by the end of the day and the ride hit Clubman level in a few places yesterday. It was dark before we got back to the cars. See you out there again soon, Al
Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 14, 2011, 08,30:52 AM Thanks Al, sounds like a big day!
I've done about 6 changes and the oil is nearly there. My routine was pretty much - warm bike up for 3 min, drain oil, replace, warm bike up, drain etc. Ended up doing the changes without the oil filter, as I figured there's no point until the oil is running clean. Was reading over at DirtBikeWorld : If the oil is already emulsified, ie: mixed with the water and gone creamy, drain the lot out after warming the bike, then fill with kero, run for a few minutes through all the gears and drain. This was for a smoker, would this be OK for a 4T? If running it with kero saves me a change, or is actually better for getting rid of the crap I'd definitely do it. What do you think? Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: Tim Dykes on August 14, 2011, 08,57:11 AM I wouldn't do that with a four stroke, you need real lubrication for the sliding things, and kero is not a real lubricant. Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: AL on August 14, 2011, 09,28:48 AM Buckerooni. As Tim said. Ive always done the oil after oil change thing until clean. Then new filter and oil and after the first good ride, i drop it again to be sure. Oil is cheap compaired to the bits it can wreck. My Yami just hit 13,000ks on saturday and has had three drowings in its life. Al
Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: Aaron on August 14, 2011, 10,33:24 AM A bit of water in the engine won't do much harm. Trust me, I know. I drowned a DRZ 3 times on its first ride...... or was it 4.
My KTM also went under several times. All were fine. Rowan was not so lucky, he sucked in a bunch of mud/sand and damaged a motor on a 2 stroke. Title: Re: Fumina Level 2 Post by: buckerooni on August 31, 2011, 10,23:50 AM all good now. had a bit of an oil leak as I'd compressed the alloy a bit on the oil hose through over torquing it. Replaced the bolt and sanded the area smooth and square again - no leak ;D saved myself $135 for a new part.
