I wonder if they made them out of balsa wood and glue as they weren't expecting them still to be flying for too many years?

I think they made it from Balsa so it could reach the claimed 400 mph, also if it got blown up it would have covered the enemy with splinters  Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy

Vampires were also wood and fabric, as was much of the Hawker Hurricane which was the mainstay fighter of the RAF over WWII although the Spitfire was to become more famous.

Wood and fabric is still a very good material for aircraft manufacture and is still used in the Pitts Special aerobatic planes.

Fabric was also battle resistant as shells would pass through it with minimal loss of strength.
